( CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! )

' to help your
character develop '

▂▂▂▂▂▂

I personally hate how in some stories the character does change but the development was poorly written.

I'm not trying to call anyone out or anything but here's an example:
I read this the 100 fic once and the OC was a grounder. At the beginning she was lethal and emotionless but by the end she would have died for nearly any of the 100 deliquesce. But throughout the whole story she was chained up and said like a sentence and all of a sudden shes in love with Bellamy. hOw?

Literally nothing happened to show her development. All she did was sit in the dirt for like a week watching the 100.

Tips for writing good character development:
- major events
Use major & dramatic events to help develop your character
People usually change after these types of events so your character should be different after it
Examples:
- watching someone get murdered
- a close person dying (parents, siblings, spouse, very close friends, etc.)
- a war
- surviving a huge plane crash
- almost being killed or raped
- being kidnapped/held hostage for a long time
- surviving an attack (kinda like 9/11)
- surviving a bombing

- thoughts
Readers are able to understand the characters more when they know what they're thinking. You don't have to state every little thing going through the oc's head, just include the key point.

- dialogue
Dialogue can reveal a lot about a character. It can express their feelings, likes, dislikes, and much more.

- interactions
Character interactions are important. They are basically what builds up the story. If there weren't any interactions then the story would be boring.

- parallel scenes
Use parallel scenes to show the development of your character.
For example in chapter two the character can say
"You're not my responsibility and I don't care wether you die or not"
And then by chapter twenty-five or so the character does to make sure everyone is safe
"As long as I'm alive non of you are dying. Y'all are my responsibility"
( ew that was cringey but you get the point )

Examples of good character development:

Allison Argent (Teen Wolf)

Lydia Martin (Teen Wolf)

Rick Grimes (The walking dead)

Michonne (the walking dead)

Carol Pelletier (the walking dead)

Sam Winchester (supernatural)

Alison Dilaurentis (pretty little liars)

Malia tate (teen wolf)

Derek Hale (teen wolf)

Octavia Blake (the 100)

Bellamy Blake (the 100)

Castiel (supernatural)

John Murphy (the 100)

Bucky Barnes (mcu)

Isaac Lahey (teen wolf)

also, enjoy this cute gif of malia at the top because I had a crush on her when I wrote this :)
