Snake in the Pride

"Yes, yes," Snape sighs. "It seems you do not have enough time to do the potion on your own.  Work with Miss Weasley.  You two shall share a grade for today."

Y/n's heart skips a beat as Draco comes to move in beside her and her cheeks flush a light red hue.

"Hi, y/n," Draco smiles.

"Did you decide to try to take a nap between periods again?" y/n chuckles as he pulls up a stool.

"I was grabbing my textbook, thank you very much," Draco smirks.

"... but?" she adds.

"I did fall asleep on my bed.... accidentally," he adds with a playful eye roll.   "Anyway, I hope I don't mess up your potion.  It looks like it's going well so far."

"You couldn't mess it up, Draco.  You have full marks in this class," y/n says return as Draco gives her another warm grin.  Y/n's heart jumps in her chest, knowing very well that if her siblings found out about her long-time crush on Draco, she wouldn't live to the next day.  She couldn't help herself, though.  During first year, the Slytherins were, of course, unwelcoming, but Draco was the only one who treated you like a human.  He'd hang out, study, and mess around with you, pranking Filch and the Hufflepuffs with you.  In time, with his acceptance, the other Slytherins came around and treated you as one of their own.  He was a genuine friend, who she had grown to have a crush on, but he could never know her feelings because she'd probably be shunned for the rest of school year by the only friends she had.  Despite being caught in the friend zone, she was happy with her relationship but wanted more.

"Thanks, y/n.  Let's get to work," he smiles, picking up a knife to chop the next ingredients.  Smiling to herself, y/n chuckles lightly, listening to the cauldron bubble away.

As class gets out, y/n and Draco sprint out of the dungeons and up the stairs to the Great Hall for lunch, y/n being tugged along by Draco, their school parchment flying everywhere.  They had both aced the brewing session and are looking forward to taking a break.  Filing into the Great Hall with the rest of the students, they take their seats at the Slytherin table as the other Weasleys glare and y/n.  Draco looks to y/n and sees her sulk as her heart sinks in her chest.  Bringing her into a hug, he takes a deep breath.

"Don't mind them.  They're just blind," he tells her.  "They don't see what they're missing out on: a great girl who deserves to be loved."

"You're sweet, Draco, but they'll never like me.  We're just too different.  I doubt if I disappeared and was found dead in a hole they would bat an eye," she grumbles.

"Don't say that, y/n," Draco sighs.  "You're their sister.  They love you."

"They got a funny way of showing it," she scoffs, looking down the table to see what she should eat.

"You look tired," Draco comments.

"I am," she groans, putting her head down on the table.

"... and tired of your siblings."

"I am."

"How about we skip?" Draco suggests. She perks your head up in disbelief and stares at Draco for a few seconds.  "You seem really stressed and you should take some time off."

"Really?" she questions.  "Draco Malfoy the prefect is suggesting we skip classes?  My looks like you're not doing your job."

"Come on, do you want to or not?" he says with a chuckle and rolling his eyes.  Y/n nods and they finish their lunch quickly, ditching their school bags in a broom closet and rushing down the Black Lake, laughing to each other. Taking off her shoes and socks, y/n wades into the water, skipping rocks on the water and watching them disappear.
