The heat clings desperately as Aubrienne flies down the stairs, seeking sanctuary.

Jebediah's face is stony, pulling her close. "Shhh. You're safe now."

She relaxes, pouring from the brandy snifter she'd pilfered.

Grasping a glass, he downs it gratefully. Pleasure is rare.

"You're not the only one everyone wants dead, love."

Her lips curl up, a bitter taste.  "I'm the only one who'd never trade my lover's safety."

The sound of footsteps grows heavier. "Aubrienne, you don't think I'd..."

"I think it matters little."

She slips outside, the sound of glass shattering behind her.

Aubrienne adores her garden. Queen Anne's lace withers, but Madame Belladonna reigns supreme.
