JAEMIN
it was the same old routine as soon as i stepped into class. i was attending a relatively prestigious private high school in Seoul.
nearly all the students in my class were heirs to powerful families and companies.
and i was part of that majority of the class.
i'm not exactly proud about it, but i'm a third generation heir of the Na conglomerate. when my grandfather passed away when i was twelve, my dad took over as the chairman of the conglomerate.
in the business world, my family is known to be extremely influential, since the conglomerate had many different branches which were involved in many different work sectors such as health care and engineering.
moreover, my dad was the director of the school.
just as i sat down on my seat all the way to the back, the boy that sat in front of me turned around to greet me. he was the son of a hospital director.
"hi, jaemin! good morning." he greets me with a smile, and i observe his eyes. they weren't really smiling with him.
getting on my good side....
i could only put on a fake smile of my own and acknowledged his greeting.
"hey, would you like to hang out at my place after school?" he offers.
"um...sorry. i have to study at home." I quickly threw in a lame excuse.
his face fell slightly. "oh, okay...my dad would have loved to see you, though. too bad." and just like a passing storm, his lips curved into a smile again and he turned back to the front.
i let the corner of my lips droop back into a thin line when he did.
again, the same routine every day. fake greetings, smiles and invitations.
my thoughts were soon interrupted as my homeroom teacher entered. the students all made a beeline to their seats. i didn't have a seat mate, our class had always been an odd number.
but it looks like that would change today.
because the homeroom teacher walked in with a petite girl with dark hair that reached past her shoulders.
i didn't recognise her as a heiress.
a scholarship student, maybe?
"okay guys, listen up!" ms lee raised her voice. "she will be part of our class from today onwards. she's a scholarship student, so take good care of her."
"alright kid, you can introduce yourself now." the homeroom teacher gestures for her to speak.
she looked out towards us nervously, and introduced herself in quite a loud voice. "good morning, everyone, i'm kang hana. pleased to meet you." she trails her eyes across the room and we accidentally make eye contact.
i widened my eyes in surprise, and so did she.
"hana, please take a seat at the back over there. you see the empty seat?" she broke eye contact with me first to turn her attention towards the teacher.
ms lee was motioning towards my direction. so, the girl returned her gaze back to the seat beside me.
"ah, yes, ms lee." she nods, and then scurried her way towards my table.
she bows politely at me before taking a seat. for some reason, she seemed really stiff. i watch as she briefly glances at my name tag.
as soon as her seating was decided, ms lee leaves the classroom. when she did, the class erupted in whispers.
they thought i couldn't hear them, but i heard something along the lines of how the unknown girl did not deserve to sit next to me. i glanced at the girl beside me and wondered if she had heard what i did.
sitting next to me....was never a good thing.
especially for a girl like her.

KANG HANA
i can't believe that in my new school and new classroom, i would see the weird but handsome guy from the convenience store. and become his seat mate.
this was messed up. he wouldn't recognise me, right?
i couldn't exactly be comfortable in my seat, so i was glad when the school bell rang, signalling the start of lunch break.
i headed to the cafeteria in high spirits and was glad that their school had direction plates.
when i arrived at the cafeteria, there was a lot of people buzzing and eating their food. i got into line and fortunately, it was fast.
picking up my tray filled with delicious food, i then realised that i had no one to sit with.
but then someone came to my rescue.
"hi! you're the scholarship girl, right?" i turned towards the voice.
i glanced at the girl's name tag who had addressed me.
seo na eun
"uh...yes." i answered.
"do you want to sit with me? and my friends, of course." she asked in a friendly tone.
"really?"
"yeah, you don't have to worry. my friends are really nice. they're sitting at that table over there." she points towards a group of girls on my right.
i recall how my dad told me to be very careful in schools like these where many of the rich are at.
and so i hesitated.
"oh...uh," but then na eun laughed.
"why are you hesitating? come on." she grabs onto my arm and pulled me.
"h-hey, i never agreed–" i try to refuse.
she stopped dead in her tracks.
"you don't have a choice, girl. come on now, we want to be friends with you, jaemin's seat mate." i furrow my brows at her words.
i wasn't liking what she just said.
she didn't want to be my friend, she wanted to be the friend of jaemin's seat mate.
"sorry, na eun, but please let go of me." i try yanking my hands out of her tight grip, but she didn't even flinch.
"no, no, i–"
"yah, seo na eun, can't you see that she doesn't want to eat with you?" an unfamiliar voice interrupts our conversation.
i turn my head towards the voice and didn't recognise the student.
but his name tag read:
mark lee
