Chapter Six

We got out of the taxi and I paid for the ride. We walked up to the door and she stopped, looking at me like this was departure. She couldn't leave when I got her this far!

"You can stay for a while," I said to her.

"If it's okay with your mother," she said back.

To hell what my mother says, even though she'd let her stay.

We entered the house and my mum pulled me into a tight hug. "I missed you soo much! Never leave me again!" she cooed to me.

"Mum!" I complained. This was so embarrassing with Dakota standing behind me.

"Sorry," she said, finally releasing me. "And who might this be?" She turned to Dakota, taking in her appearance. My grandfather never told her about Dakota. Mum was convinced that he was in love with her mother.

"Mum, this is Dakota Slater. She saved my life," I said. I knew that she'd do anything for anyone who kept me living.

"It would be an honor if you stayed with us for a while," my mum said.

"Thank you," Dakota said. She wasn't much of a talker.

"I'm just going to alert your grandfather that we have a guest," mum said to me.

Here we go, I thought.

"I'll show you where the guest room is," I said to Dakota, buying time for my mum to explain to my grandfather that Dakota has arrived.

I walked up the stairs, Dakota at my heels, her luggage in my hand. I opened the door and placed her bags on the ground.

"Thank you, Andrew," she said to me.

"Call me Andy," I said back. Call me Andy? How lame, I sounded desperate!

There was a knock at the door and my mum came in. I hope a bought enough time for him to be ready.

"Dakota, Andrew's grandfather would like to meet you if that's alright," she said. She looked on the verge of tears... he must have told her.

"Okay," she said.

My mum led her downstairs and into my grandfather's room.

"Peter," she whispered.

"Dakota," he whispered back.

My mum and I left them alone, and I had to explain.

She was crying, saying why repeatedly. "Mum..." I tried.

"I thought he loved my mum! My own father! Love someone else!" She sobbed harder. "And now she's back! What's my father going to do then? Was this his last request? Is he going to kill himself or something?" She looked at me.

I looked down.

"He is isn't he?" she whispered.

I nodded.

She started to cry again. I hugged her. "Mum, it's alright. He's been hanging on this long for her. Dakota left him so he could be happy with grandmother. Don't blame her. Thank her. If it wasn't for her, we wouldn't be alive."

She started to cheer up. "How long have you known?" She asked.

"Since he first moved in. Those were the pictures and stories he was always telling me."

"But why? Why tell you?" she asked.

"He wanted me to find her so he could say goodbye."

"Then what? Break the poor girl's heart?"

"Then he asked me to show her love..."

It sunk in for her. "You don't have to do what your grandfather says."

"I want to," I whispered.

"You love her?"

I nodded. "I've never felt this way before...

My grandfather died that night. He'd be respected forever. He would always have Dakota's heart, and he may have ripped it in half, but now it was my turn.

After the funeral that Sunday, Dakota left.
