"Oh, sweet, what are you—" I didn't get to finish because he ended the call, leaving that same inexplicable feeling to form in my stomach again. I was at a loss for words—I didn't know what to say, what to think, or how to feel about my best friend since second grade hanging up on me. Ryan never did that!
I was just seconds away from letting out an indistinguishable sound, but the sound of my father's voice looming over me made my lips unknowingly press themselves together to remain silent. "I thought Ryan was coming over," he said.
My hands moved faster than my brain could because before I knew it, I had acquired a silver fork and was starting to devour the cold casserole straight of out of the pan in an angry fever. I ate quickly, stuffing my mouth bite after bite without bothering to chew. "Ryan's mad at me," I mumbled, mouth full.
"What? That's the first I'm hearing of that. You two never fight."
"I know, Dad," I turned around to face him, and I saw a look of disgust cross his face at the sight of the food hanging from my mouth, "which is why our friendship is doomed. Liza told me that she didn't see Ryan in my future, and I thought she was lying but I think her fortune is coming true."
My dad propped his leg against the island, and scoffed. "So you believe whatever comes out of that crazy girl's mouth? I told you she wasn't good for you. You need someone like Yvonne Flank from your chemistry class."
I squinted at him. Yvonne Flank was the daughter of George Flank, my dad's work colleague. "Yvonne is hideous."
He shrugged. "But she's smart."
"Can't date her if I can't get up to her, Dad."
I felt his dark, stone cold eyes follow my every move as I turned away from him to continue eating. Sex was a sensitive subject for my parents because they expected me to spend all of my time studying and reaching my fullest potential. They didn't want to see me fuck it up by getting a girl pregnant, but with the way things were currently going, I wouldn't have totally minded that.
"I'm sure you and Ryan will be fine," he insisted, completing disregarding my comment. "When you guys were younger, Ryan always threw a fit when his foster mom came to pick him up from the house because he didn't want to leave. I've never seen a friendship quite like you two–I haven't really had many friendships of my own."
That part was true. My parents were so stuck in their own world that they never had the time for social relationships. My greatest fear was having the same thing happen to me.
"Everything was fine. Everything was great—no, everything was perfect! Then all of a sudden, Ryan comes out to me, and now he's acting all different!" I threw my hands in the air in defeat, illustrating the amount of patience I had with the situation. "He's being a dick."
His brows shot up instantly. "Ryan is one of those ... those gays? Like his parents?"
I nodded. "Insanely."
"Hmph," he hummed, shaking his head in disapproval. He was thinking long and hard about something. Whatever it was, it made him cross his legs and glance down to the linoleum floor. After a full moment, his brown eyes flicked to mine. "As long as you don't let that misguide you."
To that, I forced a laugh. "Mom didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"I'm gay."
I watched my dad's eyes widen to the size of saucers, and even though he tried to suppress it and act like the news didn't affect him, I knew that it had. How could it not? I had exhausted every effort in trying to be the opposite of what my parents wanted me to be, and this was just one more thing.
"So, what, you and Ryan ... you're lovers?"
I felt my nose crinkle in disgust at the thought of wanting Ryan to be anything more than a best friend. "No, of course we're..." I began to tell him that such a suggestion was absurd, but the words came short of my tongue when the realization hit me.
I knew exactly how to make Ryan forgive me.
"Yeah," I ended up saying after gulping down my previous words. "Ryan and I are lovers."

a/n: I'm sorry that this chapter is a bit short—consider it a filler chapter before all the juicy stuff happens in the next chapter! I'm not that happy with the way this chapter was written so this will probably have to be edited in the future, but until then, enjoy.
The plot is thickening guys! What do you think is happening to Bobby and Ryan's friendship?
Even though it is a short chapter, I'd appreciate it if you guys could vote and comment to show the love!
Until next time,
Lara <3
