June of 1942

As I began to make my way towards the door to leave the munitions factory, I couldn't help but notice a young man, who looked to be around my age, staring at me. I had seen him around, but I hardly ever paid much attention to anyone since I tended to get so focused on the work that needed to be done. Now, as I got a good look at him, I found him to be quite handsome.

He smirked at me and I gave him a little smile. I could feel the heat on my cheeks growing. I had been stared at by men before and I normally didn't like it, but I kind of liked being noticed by this man since he seemed to be polite so far. I snapped out of my thoughts as I realized I had been staring at him longer than I should've. I felt my face heat up out of embarrassment and I quickly walked out of the factory. As I entered a neighborhood and continued to walk fast, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me.

"Excuse me, ma'am! Wait!"

I turned around and saw the man who had been staring at me jogging towards me. My heart began to beat faster as my nerves rose since I didn't expect him to run after me. I didn't know this man nor his intentions and I didn't feel very safe as I noticed there was nobody else around.

"Woo! You're very fast!" he said, slightly out of breath. He then stuck out his hand, "But hello ma'am, I'm Wayne Simmons. And you are?"

"Hello, I'm Y/N L/N. Nice to meet you," I said while shaking his hand. I allowed myself to calm down once I realized he wasn't trying to hurt me, but I didn't let my guard down completely. At the same time, I was feeling glad to be talking to him since he seemed kind and I was curious to get to know him.

"Nice to meet you too, Y/N. I couldn't resist not coming up to you to ask if you'd like to maybe... go out some time," he said nervously.

I was able to get a better look at his features now that he was up close. He had short, brown hair that was parted and combed back. His eyes were a nice blue and his face was cleanly shaven. He also looked to be about six feet tall.

"Well, that sounds fun," I fiddled with my purse, "What did you have in mind?"

"I was thinking we have dinner and take a nice walk around the city. I'll pick you up around, let's say, seven o'clock this Friday. How does that sound?" Wayne asked and I agreed and gave him my address. We then said our goodbyes and I began to walk home once again.

I was filled with lots of excitement walking home and it was definitely hard to hide it when I walked into the house. My mother noticed it immediately since my shifts at the munitions factory normally didn't spark much excitement in me.

"What happened?" she asked with a smirk and I immediately began to tell her every little detail. She was happy for me and told me she'd take me out to get a new dress for my date on Friday.

"Aw, mother, you don't have to do that," I said.

"But I want to. You've been such a big help around here. You deserve it," she kissed me on the forehead and walked off towards the kitchen to start dinner.

I felt so thankful since I know money can be an issue for us sometimes. Although I didn't mind just rummaging around for something nice in my wardrobe, I couldn't help but feel excited to go buy a new dress since I don't go shopping very often.

I went up to my room and began listening to the radio, but it was quite hard to listen for any new information on the war with the thought of Wayne in my head.
