so I went to Japan

When I was in Japan, we visited Kyoto for a day. While we were at the Golden Pavillion, we sat down and an old lady about four feet tall, dressed in black, and pushing a rolling walker with a pink and a blue tote bag approached us. I made eye contact with her and she gave my mom a bowl and a magazine.

My mom intentionally left the magazine on the bench after the old lady left because she didn't want it.

Not much later, we were in a shop, not far from where we first met the old lady, and I stepped out, only to be greeted with the sight of her.

I bowed a bit (as is customary), and smiled because I thought we recognized each other.
My siblings also left the shop and the old lady handed my sister two bowls wrapped as one, and me a bowl, and a magazine each. We literally couldn't say no. She then turned the corner and promptly disappeared all together.

I assume she's some form of ancient diety that takes the form of an old lady and hands out ceramics to random women.

I've been referring to her as "The Bowl Goddess" ever since.

That was definitely a highlight of my vacation in Japan.
