Im back and angstier than ever baby

Warnings: smoking, mentions of death, ethan is 18 but only barely, 7 year age gap, i mean its smaller than pushing limits couple, talking about death, this sounds more depressing than it is actually wow, and the worst of all: work.

Also i typed this on my ipad so sorry for all the mistakes tyler kept getting corrected to style

One last note, this might seem like tyler is overreacting or something: hold in mind, this "system" you'll come to know rules the whole world. It holds power, it has the ability to ruin lives. Just keep that in mind while you read and try to sympathize with tyler.

That out of the way: enjoy!

When somebody turns 18, they'll be able to tell their soulmates date of death. It's both a blessing and a curse, honestly. A blessing for those who know they'll live full, long and happy lives with their loved one, and a curse for those who had to tell their lover they would die soon.

Ethan now knew his soulmate was the one and only Tyler Scheid, his colleague. And he was ok with that. Sure, he might have jumped up and down from happiness when he strolled into the office that morning, and he might have been in love with Tyler since the first time they locked eyes.

But Ethan hadn't done anything about it, because Tyler was cool and stone-faced, muscled and so handsome it should be a crime, and not to mention, older. Tyler was 25, and there was no way a grownup who could have anyone he wanted with a charming smile that he didn't show Ethan often enough would want just legal, small and weird Ethan. So when Ethan saw the dates in Tyler's own neat handwriting floating above his head, his breath escaped his lungs for a moment.

That date was yesterday's.

Ethan's head hurt. How did that happen? Tyler was here. Tyler definitely wasn't dead. Did nature make an error? What happened?

Ethan decided he had been staring at the back of Tyler's head for long enough and walked into the office.

"Good morning Tyler!" His voice was shaking, was too high-pitched and sounded fake even to his own ears. Tyler turned his head a little, staring at Ethan with cold, piercing blue eyes.

"Nestor", Tyler said by way of greeting with a small nod.

Ethan fell down in his chair at his desk opposite to Tyler's. It was a nice place, Ethan thought, not for the first time. Since they were seated pretty high in the building, there weren't many people and it was nice and quiet.

Their shared office reminded Ethan of a shared room between college students straight out of a comedy show. The only thing they missed was the tape splitting the room in half.

Tyler's office looked the same every morning. The big whiteboard next to him was decorated with all kinds of thought processes on how to make the sales raise, graphs and random numbers. There were a few newspaper articles attached to it. On his desk was a pile of the actual newspapers, always with the current date on top. Next to it was a cup of coffee that even though Tyler drank a lot always seemed to be full.

Since Ethan was the IT guy on their floor, he wasn't expected to show up in full suit like Tyler did every morning (not that Ethan was complaining, he had spent a lot of time fantasizing about Tyler in and out of suits) and instead was more carefree, lose and decorated his side as such. There were multiple plants in the windowsill (when complained, Ethan pulled up some random article about how plants increase the productivity) and were Tyler's side seemed to be black, white and grey Ethan's side had literally every colour he could think of (if he found a new colour he added it to the office).

Ethan leaned back in his chair and chewed on his bottom lip. If Tyler was his soulmate, why didn't he say anything? Tyler should have known when Ethan walked in, only 16 year old, shy and nervous taking a seat in front of the intimidating Tyler.

He had known when he stared back with cold blue eyes, asking him why he was staring at him. He had known when he told Ethan to kindly fuck off and let him work.

He sighed, twirling around in his chair. He felt someone glare at him, and he didn't even have to look to get that familiar feeling in his chest. It felt like he had been punched in the chest, like all air was leaving his body. Normally people probably didn't feel that way when they were in love. Whatever, Ethan wasn't other people.

Since there were no clients right now, Ethan didn't have much to do. There weren't a lot of people in the building today, and most of them didn't even use a computer. He started up Google, typing the question that floated around in his head.

My soulmate isn't dead but his date expired

There weren't a lot of results. Most of the sites were about how to deal with a soulmate dying or dying soon. Ethan had to suppress a chuckle. If his soulmate was dead, he definitely wouldn't go onto the internet searching how to act.

After searching for quite some time, he found a site. It was called Soulerrors, and just reading the name gave him goose bumps. His mouse was hovering, his hands were shaking. On the site was an index with all categories.
No dying dates
• Dying date changes
• Multiple dying dates
• Incorrect dying dates
• Expired dying dates
And a whole lot more. Ethan stared at the letters in disbelief. Was the soulmate system really that flawed?

Just as he worked up the courage to click his problem, Tyler's cold voice cut through the silence.

"I'm going to get lunch, then I'm going on my lunch break. Do you want to come with?" Tyler's voice almost seemed to have a warm undertone. Ethan looked at the clock and holy shit he had been here for three hours already. Ethan was torn between refusing and clicking the link and accepting and getting lunch with Tyler.

"Yeah, sure," Ethan said before he could stop himself. This was the first time Tyler had asked this, and also probably the first time he said something to Ethan that wasn't mean or at least said like he wanted Ethan to leave as quickly as possible.

"Great. Let's go."
