Around the time of Age of Ultron. MCU-based.

"Pietro, Wanda, wait!" 8-year-old (Y/N) called out, chasing after her twin friends, two years older than her.

Pietro and Wanda laughed, then quickly dashed away into their apartment. (Y/N) sighed, then ran after them. Soon, she caught up with them, finding them out of breath and leaning against their apartment door.

"I told you to wait." (Y/N) grumbled, sitting down in between her friends.

Wanda chuckled and put an arm around her. "Aww, don't worry, (Y/N). We'd never leave you."

Just then, the door they sat next to opened, and the three children were met with the face of the Maximoff twins' mother.

"(Y/N), how nice it is to see you again!" she exclaimed, sweeping her up in a hug. "I've missed you so. Now, Piet, Wanda, dinner will be ready soon." she added. She gave a knowing look at her children. They nodded solemnly, then walked past their mother and into their house.

The twins' mother knelt down so that she was eye level with (Y/N). She wore a reassuring smile, but her eyes held worry in them.

"(Y/N), would you like to eat dinner with us tonight?" she asked (Y/N) quietly, referring to her parents not taking care of her. Her parents were often not at home, and when they were, they acted as if (Y/N) didn't exist.

(Y/N) nodded. "I don't have family anyway."

"Hush, child." the twins' mother chided gently. "Don't talk that way." She ushered (Y/N) into the apartment, and the twins instantly came bounding out of their respective rooms with bright smiles.

Little did they know....

10 years later...

"Now, I want you to try that again, (Y/N). And this time with more strength." Strauss instructed harshly as I tumbled and fell on the floor.

I grumbled and narrowed my eyes. Strauss was really getting on my nerves. He was drilling me on using my knives in combat. I really didn't see why, as I was able to freeze my opponent in time just by snapping my fingers. He should really shut up if he knew what's best for him, lest he find one of my knives in him.

Again, I launched myself at my opponent, sliding my knives into my hands as I did so. I flipped over my opponent, wrapping my legs around their neck and sitting on their shoulders. I stabbed my knife through the protective padding they wore, and they tapped my leg to let me know I was finished.

I flipped off and tucked my knives away while Strauss clapped with the most emotionless smile on his face. I inwardly scowled at him.

"That is enough training for today, (Y/N). Tomorrow, you go on your mission. Report to my office for details." he instructed.

I nodded and he left.

"NO! NO! DON'T TAKE THEM! THEY'RE MY FAMILY! YOU CAN'T TAKE THEM! NO!" (Y/N) screamed, thrashing against a soldiers grasp, even though it was pointless. Two other soldiers were prodding Pietro and Wanda away from her, to a truck that led to who-knows-where.

(Y/N) struggled and squirmed, trying to reach her friends, but the soldier's grip held her fast. She eventually gave up trying to struggle and just hung in the soldier's arms limply, crying and whimpering for her friends.

Once her friends were safely stowed away in the truck, the soldier kept his hold on her, but knelt down to face her, blocking her view from the truck. She tried craning her neck around the soldier to see what would happen of the truck, but he gently turned her head back to face him.

"Are you hungry, little one?" he asked softly with a kind smile.

(Y/N) looked down, not saying a word, not moving to show anything. The soldier pulled out a bundle of something, then handed it to her. He tilted her head up to face him.

"I know it's not much, but please, eat. You'll kill yourself if you don't eat." he told her.

"I'd much rather kill myself anyway. You took away my only family. You took away their only family. We only had each other, and now, they're gone from me, I'm gone from them. Life will be sad without them."

The soldier's smile was replaced with an expression of utter shock. He didn't know how such a young child could tell him something so deep. He didn't know how she knew what words to say without hesitating one beat.

"Well, I'd like it if you lived." the soldier replied, recovering from his shock. "Maybe I'll even adopt you three."

(Y/N) sadly shook her head and sat down at the tree behind her. "I'll be long gone by then."

The soldier sighed and stood up, walking back to the truck. He turned back right before he went in to see the girl had opened the bundle he gave her and began eating the food inside it. She looked up at him, and he swore....

He swore he could feel her look into his soul....

He swore she saw a flash of guilt in his eyes....

He swore he felt a pang of shame for what he did....

He stared at her for a moment longer, and at the end of the moment, she closed her eyes and leaned her head back. Her hands went limp, and the food she had been holding slipped out of her hands. He let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding, and dropped his head. He didn't want to do this, he didn't want to drug her so that her memories would be erased. He didn't want to take her family away from her. He didn't want to do anything to harm an innocent little girl like her. He didn't want to be killed by HYDRA when they came to his apartment. He only wanted to survive.

That was the last he saw of the little girl before he turned away and jumped into the truck, the image of her head lolling back onto the tree and her body going limp engraved into his head until his dying day.
