Tuesday sure is a long day. I sighed to myself while flipping through my library book. It was a nonfiction novel based on Truman and his role in WW2. As much as I hated it, I have to do a PowerPoint presentation on what I learned and (hopefully) gain all 300 points my civics teacher said he would give us.
I, without a doubt, have the attention span of a goldfish. I couldn't keep myself focused on the book. My eyes kept traveling up to my crush, Mckenna, who was chatting quietly with her friend. She was absolutely beautiful. She had long, blonde hair, dark blue eyes, and one dimple on her left cheek. She had a bad reputation for being uptight due to her beauty, but I knew she was a very genuine person. She caught me looking at her from the corner of her eye and grinned at me teasingly. I quickly looked back down. My cheeks were getting redder as the seconds passed. I've only been in 10th grade for 5 months and Mckenna is still my one and only crush.
Just as I was about to pull out my phone to shoot her a text, the intercom sounded.
"Students, PLEASE - go home immediately! Call your parents or guardians. There is no time to explain but this is an emergency. Get home..NOW." Spoke our principal. Her voice was filled with fear and there was heavy breathing.
Students immediately began pulling out their phones. The chattering and panic grew. I sent 3 texts to my mom and 4 to my dad. What was going on? Why would we be sent home without warning? There was so many questions I needed to be answered. I looked up at my teacher, Ms. Prowley, who was looking at her phone with widened eyes.
"Ms.Prowley, what's going on?" I said.
"Yeah." Said a few other kids in unison.
She looked up at us with trembling hands. Her skin grew paler. "Th-..There's been some sort of widespread virus out of the blue."
I was confused. I looked around the room to see the shared confusion on the other kids' faces. Why would a virus require us to be sent home? We usually would just go to the nurse.
Mckenna brushed a few strands of hair behind her ear. "What do you mean by virus?"
"It's an epidemic," Prowler sighed. "It's causing people to attack each other. The cities are like a frenzy. Whatever it is, it's spreading quickly."
I looked outside the windows to see the cars of anxious parents pulling up. Students started getting up out of their seats and rushing out immediately. I searched for my mom's car but to my luck I didn't see her anywhere. Thankfully I only lived 2 blocks away. I grabbed my backpack and followed the long trail of students evacuating. I was right behind Mckenna whose cheeks were red from panicking. I cleared my throat and looked away from her. Was whatever going on curable? This is the most insane thing I've heard this year since the damn election.
We evacuated the building from the back exit in our hall. As soon as the doors opened, kids coming from all directions began running to their parents cars. Originally, I wasn't very afraid but I began to feel the fear seeing that my parents weren't here. I repeated that sentence in my head. My parents weren't here. Oh god. My mouth slightly opened out of shock. My parents...Weren't here. In any emergency like this, they would be here first-hand.
I had to get home immediately. I began running past all of the cars and crowd of kids. Home was all I could think about.
