Sophie Foster woke up to the sound of voices talking. She turned her head to look at the clock and saw that it was 1:46 am. Gosh, it was early. Who would be up at this time? She tiptoed out of bed and slowly opened the door, trying to stop it from creaking. Sadly, all it did was make the creaking louder and longer. She winced at the unsatisfying sound. Careful not to make a sound, she walked softly to the kitchen to where the voices were coming from.

Sophie was scared now. She could still hear Grady and Edaline snoring from the room next to hers, their bedroom, so it wasn't them. 'Oh my gosh' she thought 'if I die tonight, tell Fitz I love him!'. She closed her eyes because she was talking to herself, and if she died, then she couldn't tell Fitz she loved him, she would be dead! Now Sophie was sure she was going crazy. She reached the kitchen and saw Biana and Tam standing there, arguing. Dex and Linh stood near by shaking their heads.

"What are you guys doing here at this hour?!" Sophie whisper screamed, careful not to wake up her adoptive parents. All four of them jumped, surprised. "Sophie! You scared us!" Biana hissed. "Yeah well, it's a small price to pay for breaking into my house this late!" "Actually," Dex started, "it's 'this early' not 'this late'" but when Sophie turned her head towards him and glared with all her might, he reluctantly shut up. "Aw, don't worry Dex, Sophie's just cranky Fitz isn't here." Sophie turned red as a strawberry. "I'm not CRANKY!". Linh giggled but it was hard for Sophie to get mad at her sweet friend. Biana and Dex were her best friends so it was easy to get into arguments with them but they always made up in the end.

Sophie, Dex, and Biana had met in the third grade and had been friends ever since. Sophie and Dex met Keefe and Fitz later when they went to Bianas house for the first time since Fitz was Bianas brother and Keefe was his best friend. They hadn't met them earlier due to the fact that Fitz and Keefe were both a grade above them. Dex immediately took a disliking to Fitz when he accidentally called Dex 'Deck'. Dex had responded with "look dude, I know I have a weird name, but you do too and I'm not going to call you Bitz, so don't call me Dex!" Sophie smiled at the memory. It was later, maybe in 7th grade that Sophie started liking Fitz, like, like-liking him. Tam and Linh came later in 8th grade and quickly made friends with all of them, however Tam did get into fights occasionally, okay more than occasionally with Keefe and Biana.

Now they were all juniors in high school well, well at least they were to be soon, and Sophie still hasn't gotten over that crush. Of course he doesn't have the faintest idea that he likes her. "Hello?" someone snapped their fingers in front of Sophie's face. She got out of her daze and saw that it was Biana. "Man, you were very deep in thought" Tam said to Sophie and Sophie turned red again. "As I was saying," Biana went on, "Fitz didn't want to come because he thought he would get into trouble. And I don't know why Keefe didn't want to come as he practically lives for pranking people." Sophie had a pretty good idea why he didn't want to come. He and Biana used to be together but then they broke up and Biana says they are just friends now but Sophie was pretty sure he thought it would be awkward. She was also pretty sure that he was right. Wait-"you guys were going to prank me?!"

Linh sheepishly pulled out a roll of toilet paper from her purse and showed Sophie the inside of it, revealing six more rolls. "Aw, come on Biana why'd you have to rat us out" Tam groaned. "Well I'm SORRY" Biana huffed loudly. "Hey, keep it down, her parents are sleeping!" Dex interjected. "And that is why you're my best friend" Dex smiled, looking proud of himself.

"Whatever guys, we got caught. Let's just go home and forget about it. We're not master prankers like Keefe." Biana sighed. "Who said you got caught? I won't tell." Sophie smiled mischievously at her friends, "As long as I can help.". Her friends smiled back.

They ran outside giggling as Linh tossed them each a roll of toilet paper. "Not to loud guys!" Obviously Dex and Sophie were the only ones worried about getting caught. The others just laughed as loud as they wanted as they strung the toilet paper around the Panakes tree and other shrubbery. Soon Sophie let herself go and laughed louder as well and Dex did as well, albeit a little later than Sophie.

Dex and Fitz were the goody-two-shoes of the group. But Fitz was more of a goody-two-shoes than Dex was because Dex could be persuaded easily into doing something that was not quite bad but also not quite forward with the rules. With Fitz it was nearly impossible for him to even bend the rules much less break them. That was one of Fitz's few flaws, although some people might say it was not a flaw.

Keefe and Tam however were the rule breakers. Keefe more than Tam, but Tam more than everyone else in the group. Keefe loved pranking the teachers and skipping class and all that stuff that gives you detention. Tam did too but according to Linh, he had done it a LOT more before they moves here. 'Here' being the Lost Cities, a cluster of cities that were remote from most civilization. It was in San Francisco, but so Far East, that some people say it's practically its own state. The people who lived here say it is its own country.

Anyway, Sophie guessed where they lived before was far less nicer than the Lost Cities because in her opinion, the Lost Cities were nicer than anywhere she had ever been. Nobody got hurt or severely sick there, in fact it was considered one of the safest places on earth. And it's scenery and landscapes were just beautiful and, to Sophie, maybe even magical.

"There she goes again, getting lost in thought" "Sophie, hey, SOPHIE". Someone flicked her head. "HEY!" Her hand shot up to slap Biana who had flicked her. "OW! Jeez! Sorry! You were acting like a zombie!" "That doesn't mean you have to flick me!" "Well it worked didn't it?!" Sophie stopped. "Yeah, it did. Thank you and sorry I slapped you." "Sorry I flicked you" Biana replied.

"AWWW," Dex cooed, interrupting the moment. Both girls wheeled on him "Seriously?" "Sorry", he said meekly. Then Tam started laughing. And then Linh. And pretty soon they were all laughing. As they laughed Sophie couldn't help but to miss Fitz and Keefe. However when Biana brought up the subject of the first day of school, Sophie bandished the thought from her mind and went into a rant about how much she wished she did not have to go to Foxfire high school. "We're in the elite levels this year!" Linh reminded Sophie, trying to be optimistic. But Sophie, determined to be pessimistic, responded with "That's just a fancy way of saying more work" and nobody could argue with her because they all knew she was right.

Then Dex checked his phone and told everyone it was 3:15, which meant it was time for them to go. Sophie bid them goodbye and, quietly as possible, opened the back door to get inside. She tiptoed back into her bed, careful not to wake anybody, slipped under the covers and fell into a much needed sleep.
