I looked at Derek with resignation. He had just blown me off in the library, made me miss
the bus, looked me up online right after, and suddenly he is here.

“I saw you walk by the library and realized you missed the bus. I figured it was probably
my fault so I came to give you a ride so you wouldn’t have to walk,” Derek said as a way of
greeting.
“Thank you, but you really don’t have to, it’s not that cold today, and I’ve walked it
before, besides I live on a dirt road and probably don’t want to get your car dirty.” He lifted an
eyebrow at my muttering of an excuse.
“Get in, cars are made to get dirty. It’s about thirty degrees outside, you’ll get sick if you
try to walk home.“ I sighed and opened the car door, he had a point whether I liked it or not.
I sat down on the … leather seat and muttered the directions to my house as Derek
pulled away from the side of the road. I took a deep breath, slowing my erratic heartbeat. Derek
seemed calm as he followed the instructions I had relayed to him.
I tried to break the silence by asking, “So what was it that you needed help finding
earlier?” Derek looked over at me for a half second before settling his eyes back on the road.
“I was just hoping you could help me find a book,” he said as he pulled into my driveway.
“I hear you’re the chick to go to when it comes to finding books, so I figured that I’d ask you for
help. I just said nevermind because I wanted to get out of their before Madison thought to start a
conversation with me, again.”
I bit back a smile at his remark. It seems I wasn’t the only one who had a strong dislike
towards Madison. Still I said, “I thought you would like her, seeing as she's popular and all, most
do.” He just shook his head, I went to open the door when he replied, “I’d rather have a girl who
was herself, not someone who pretends she’s someone else.”
I just stared at him for a heartbeat, thanked him, then hightailed it inside. I gave a little
wave as he pulled out of the driveway. Behind me I heard Chris raise her voice at Daniel. I
sighed as I walked into the house.
Just another day at home I guess.
