In the Air

There's something in the air
Is it love or is it fear?
Is it someone drawing near
Singing something I can't hear?

Is the song a desperate plea?
Just a sad soliloquy?
Or has someone I can't see
Finally come to rescue me?

If my ears pick out the song,
Will I dare to sing along?
If I pick out right from wrong,
Will I find where I belong?

If the future's hard to say
And my woe has gone away,
Will my love be here to stay
Until I'm old until I'm gray?

If my dream's come almost true
Yet every time it ends in rue,
How can I have a clue
What time has got in store for you?

If life starts getting cold,
If my hands do turn to gold,
Will I keep myself unsold
Or will I die before I'm old?

If I have no gems to sell,
If my worth's in what I tell,
Will my conscience turn out well
Or will I end up in a cell?

I was glad to seek my plunder
From my sinking lair down under,
But since my wine's begun to sunder
It has made me stop and wonder.

Now I have so many questions
And so many more confessions.
The place where I am destined
Isn't likely to be heaven.
