Everything was going smoothly. I had been driving for a few hours but I didn't dare stop. I looked back and my family were all asleep. I looked back to the road and a biter was in the middle of it. I swerved off the road. I hit the brake before we flipped. My family woke up startled. I looked to where the biter was. It was heading towards us.

"What happened?" Dad said.

"There was a biter on the road," I said.

I turned the key, but the car wouldn't start. I tried again and again. And each time the biter was getting closer.

"COME ON!" I yelled as I banged on the steering wheel.

The car started again and I took off.

"Are you guys OK?" I asked.

"Yes. Sweetie. We're fine. Do you want me to drive? You look like you could use some sleep." Dad said.

I pulled over and parked the car.

"Yeah that sounds like a good idea," I said rubbing the back of my neck.

We traveled south. We were determined to make it to Georgia. No matter what. I was fast asleep after my dad took over the wheel. When I woke up, we were in Louisiana. Louisiana had been hit hard. There were a multitude of cars abandoned on the road. Buildings were burned and some were deteriorated. I couldn't believe it. It looked like a war zone.

"How can buildings look like this? And so quickly," I said.

"Napalm is my only guess," Dad said.

"Would the military seriously do that?" I asked.

"Maybe they thought that could fix the problem," he replied.

"I'm kind of afraid to see what Georgia looks like." I said.

"Let's hope it's not as bad as this honey," mom said.

"Odds are it's similar to this," dad added.

We kept going down the road. We saw a couple of biters here and there. But they were all preoccupied with the corpses they chewed on. The car started jumping then.

"Dad what's going on?" I asked concerned.

"Our gas tank is empty," he stated.

"What?! Damn it. I should have filled it up before I came home. Stupid," I said.

"Honey. Calm down. We aren't that far from Georgia," he said.

"Dad. We are more than 200 miles from Georgia. I don't want to put any of you in danger by walking," I said.

My dad looked at me. He was thinking. There was no way to get the car moving again. Smoke had started to come out of the hood.

"We have a pretty big amount of artillery. We can protect ourselves. We have to get to Rick no matter what, right? Walking looks like our only option. Let's go," Dad said.

We got out of the car and grabbed our things. The biters were getting closer.

"Let's hide in the trees. Now!" I yelled.

We went to the trees and looked for a decent place to be.

"Try to use the knives and axes. Limit the use on the guns. We don't want to waste the ammo. We may need it later," I said.

"Ok. Got it," they replied.

We killed as many as we could. We were all still okay. I then saw an abandoned cabin. We could definitely set up camp there.

"Dad look!" I shouted.

"It's perfect. Let's go," he said, a smile spreading across his face.

We got there and it seemed empty. But we had to double check. We couldn't take any chances. It was clear. And a safe place to rest. We boarded up the doors and windows. That way when we lit the fire, no light could come out. It was a good place. It was very small but it would have to do. I think we could actually sleep well tonight. Tomorrow, we'd head to Georgia. I wanted to see my uncle, aunt and little cousin. Family should be together. I know they're alive. Rick was a sheriff for crying out loud. From the few times that I stayed over with them, Rick was a good husband. He'd tell me that he didn't know what would have become of him if Lori wasn't in his life. He loved her dearly. And from that, I could tell that he was a good father. I wondered what Carl was like. I had never met him before. My mom and Rick had kind of a falling out before he was born and well, they hadn't spoken since. We got news of Carl's birth through a letter Lori had sent us. Still my mom wasn't talking to him and unwilling to talk to him. I never found out what it was that happened between them. Maybe I'd be able to get some answers out of her. But as for Rick, Lori and Carl, they were okay. I had to believe that. I just had to.
