Chapter 12: 'It Wasn't Me.'

What was that voice just now?

"... please..."

It's familiar.

Ah, yes... it's none other than mine.

"ALL OF YOU STOP"

It's mine.

"DROP YOUR FUCKING GUNS"

Manipulative, but mine.

They dropped their guns as their eyes turned gray. I could hear the girl's trembling voice from behind me. I have nowhere else to look.

She wailed and the only thing I could do are hear her pitter-pattering shoes come close, feel her shoulder bump against mine and watch her kneel before her fallen companion.

"Look at what you did."

I'm already looking.

Valeria nudged me towards the two of them. "Ten seconds and we're leaving."

"... I can't do it."

"But you have to." She insisted.

I took a step... Then another... Every step I make took me closer. And yet the closer I come, the farther I still feel.

"Choose your opponents next time." I simply told her for I am too ashamed to say something else. "If there'd be a next time."

"THERE'D BE A DAMNED NEXT TIME"

I trapped her wrist before she could even lay a finger on me. Inhale, exhale... Look at her in the eyes and say,

'There won't be a next time.'

That's what I should do and say. Every deadly scenario ends with three calm seconds and those six uncomplicated words.

But instead I forgot to breathe. Her teary yet blameful lavender eyes struck me and took the wrong words out of my mouth:

"I did nothing. It's the mafia."

Wrong. Do it again.

"It's the goddamned mafia."

Calm down and say the right words.

"IT WASN'T ME."
