23 missed calls.

12 missed calls from Shadow.

7 missed calls from Alec.

4 missed calls from Leah.

I stared at my phone screen, shocked that I had ignored so many calls. After the first few attempts of my friends trying to get in touch with me, I had turned my phone on silent so I wouldn't hear it ring. I hadn't realised just how much they would panic because I had assumed Marl would have told them something. It was obvious they were freaking out, wondering where I am and if I'm okay. The multiple text messages I'd also received was further proof of that.

Violet, call me, please. You're scaring me now. If something has happened to you... just call me, please. Let me know you're okay. - Shadow

Vi! Pick up the damn phone, we're worried about you! - Leah

Vi, lover boy is freaking out and we're freaking out... just tell us if you're okay! - Alec

I didn't need to read the others to know they were all similar and I found myself becoming increasingly agitated that I couldn't tell them anything. If they knew, they'd only panic that much more. Shadow would come after me, making sure I didn't go through with it and despite my earlier reservations that the plan could actually work, I was starting to believe there was a possibility it would. A slight possibility but it was better than nothing.

"Violet." Marl's voice spoke from the doorway. We were currently staying in a hotel so that Shadow and the others couldn't track us down. After everybody had left the house, Marl came back, claiming I had to leave with him. To say I'd been confused was an understatement, especially considering he refused to tell me anything.

I put my phone down with a sigh, hearing the warning tone to his voice. He didn't want me getting in touch with any of them, though I couldn't understand why. It wasn't like I was going to tell them what we were doing. "I need to let them know I'm alive. They're freaking out."

"They cannot know," Vince spoke, entering the room. "It is too dangerous for them all to know."

"Why is it?" I asked. "It's not like they're the ones actually involved."

"Guilty by association." Vince shrugged. "It is better they are kept in the dark."

"I'm still not even sure I can do this." I sighed, running my fingers through my hair, getting rid of all the knots.

"You cannot back out now."

"I didn't say I was, I just don't think I'm good enough to be doing something this important. If the hybrid suspected anything, he would kill me in a heartbeat and you know it."

Vince looked at me. "Why do you think Shadow is better off not knowing about this plan of mine?"

"Because he wouldn't let me go through with it." I repeated the words I'd been continuously telling myself.

"This is the only thing that will work," Vince said. "The only person I trust this grimoire with is Shadow so please, Violet, do not make me regret trusting you too."

"You won't regret it," I shook my head. "I just don't know whether this is such a good idea. Why did you want me to do this anyway and not someone else?"

"Because I have faith that you can do this." Vince responded, sitting on the edge of the bed and staring at me. There was no emotion passing through his eyes but I could tell he was beginning to become frustrated that I still wasn't totally on board with the idea.

"Practice." Marl spoke up, passing me a notebook and pen.

"You say it like it's that simple," I rolled my eyes but took the notebook and pen from him anyway, placing them on the table I was sat at. "You want me to learn how to write in a different language in just a few days. What if the hybrid can read Latin, by the way?"
