Chapter Two: Ladies Night

Start from the beginning

"I've got nothing to get over auntie. Everybody walks a different path through life and just because I made something of myself and he stayed in the streets does not mean that I have to cater to him whenever he needs it. Civil is a grown ass man." I heard her gasp.

"You better watch your mouth girl I know that much. But I'm going to come by the house tomorrow I believe, I've got a few things to drop off." "Alright, auntie you've got your key. And thanks again for the flowers, I really appreciate them."

"You're welcome honey. Today was the day that your life changed forever and I'm just happy that I got to be a part of it. I'll see you soon."

After saying our goodbyes I stripped myself of my clothes and laid bare, clad in nothing but my plush throw and turned on an episode of Law & Order SVU. My one guilty pleasure. It was everything but realistic but it still made for great entertainment. I was so close to falling into a deep slumber when I heard my phone ding.

I furrowed my eyebrows as I opened up the text message from an unknown number.

This nigga, I shook my head. With this I turned over, closed my eyes, and got as comfortable as could be. Yaya would be in for an earful tomorrow.

Next Day

I sat at my desk typing away as my phone went off for the third or fourth time in a row, indicating yet another text from Marcellus. He was consistent which was something I liked. Regardless though, I was the prosecuting attorney for his case and I'd rather keep my job than entertain whatever it could be that he has up his sleeves. I hadn't replied since last night and there was no bone in my body that intended to.

YaNette was content on fixing me up with somebody, and from this last stunt I was convinced she truly didn't care with who as long as they had a dick in their pants. She walked into my office and took a seat across from my desk picking up my phone.

"Girl text him back! He's fine as hell, and he seems to really be digging on you." I side eyed her hella hard. "Yaya this man is a felon. He's got pending charges as we speak."

"But Free," she started, "How do we know he's really guilty? I read the discovery myself; the evidence from his arrest could be circumstantial. How do we know someone isn't trying to set him up?" I started chuckling. "Yaya you want me fixed up so bad that you're about to start plucking them right out of the jails aren't you?" She kissed her teeth. "No but you deserve companionship. How you know this ain't the one for you?"

"Because I'm working his case. I for one think he's guilty, especially after hearing his responses to my deposition questions. He's a felon. It isn't hard to keep living that life especially if he can't get a good paying job with the blemished record that he has."

"Mmhmm, whatever. Girl you just want to grow old alone with an empty house filled with nothing but you and your cats." I started laughing. "You know I don't even like pets, it's not my thing. But please leave whatever you think there is with this guy alone? The last thing I need is anyone around here questioning my objectivity especially when I'm not even interested in being involved with this person."

"We'll see sis." She walked out of my office grinning as my phone buzzed yet again.
