Orange County, CA."How many fucking presents did you buy her? She's only turning one," Kaine grumbles as we both carry boxes into Marcel's house.
"Quit complaining and just help me bring them in," I say sitting them on the table. When Kaine sits his boxes down too I arrange the boxes stacking them and moving them in a presentable fashion. I make sure all the gift bags are lined up in the back with the tissue paper peaking out perfectly.
"I didn't get this much shit on my birthday and I'm your brother," Kaine complains once more.
"Cause you bad as hell. I don't know what you're complaining for. I bought you a car. I buy all those damn clothes on your back and shoes on your feet. Freshest little nigga at your school. You ain't getting shit else from me until you earn it," I say looking up at him.
"What about when I graduate?" He says smiling hopefully.
"You have one more semester. Maybe I'll get you a little Walmart gift card so you can go crazy." When his face drops I laugh.
"Forget you. Are we done? I heard there's a bounce house," he says rubbing his hands together like Birdman.
"Yo big ass better not go get in that bounce house," I yell behind him as he waves me off and walks away.
Today is Jodie's first birthday party and you know I had to go all out for my baby. She won't remember it, but the pictures will serve as a memory. One thing I learned from Yams is that money doesn't matter when you make the people around you happy. You can't die with money, but what's important is how people remember the impact you had on them when you've moved on.
