Chapter Twenty-Seven

Start from the beginning

We walk towards a lovely-looking elderly man selling ice cream at an ice cream stand. “Hello my dear, what will you like?” He cheerfully asked Lucky.

“I want 10 green apple popsicles.” She answered and faced me.

“Blimey! That’s a lot!” The man spoke making us laugh.

“It’s a dare.” She assured him. He just nodded and gave us the popsicles. I fished out some money to pay him.

“Thanks for paying, Alex.” I looked at Lucky and just chuckled.

“You two reminded me of Margaret and I.” The man spoke, making us turn to look at him.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“One of our dates was going to the park and getting a popsicle. It was the best moments of my life. We talked about everything. Let me tell you, the simplest things in life are the most unforgettable. ” He took out a necklace with his shaky hands and showed it to us. “This is the only thing that I kept that belongs to her. She loves this necklace. I gave it to her. It doesn’t have much value to it and I always told her that I would buy her an expensive one. But she told me that this one is already a priceless one. Because it came from the man she loved.” He put the necklace back inside his pants pocket. “She never took it off and wears it every single day, until the day she dies.”

My heart sank a little knowing his wife died. He must be a very lonely guy, now that his other half is gone.

“You two make such a great couple. I hope you cherish every moments together.” I smile, upon hearing his words. We said our goodbyes to him and walk towards a nearby bench.

“You know,” I broke the silence, “That’s two times we been called a couple.” She didn’t say anything for a while.

“Twice?” I turn to look at her and cocked an eyebrow. Realisation finally dawned on her. “Oh! That other time with the old lady when you bought me that teddy bear.”

“What happened to that teddy bear anyway?” I asked and a sly smile appeared on her face.

“Oh that bear is still alive… At the back of my closet.” My mouth opened wide, hearing her words.

“What?!” She suddenly burst out in giggles.

“You believe that? No, you silly goose. It’s safely lying on my bed.” She continued. Now it’s my turn to form a sly smile.

“On your bed?” I asked, in a playful tone. She stopped as she gets what I mean. Her cheeks began turning a deep shade of crimson. “So are you saying that you sleep with that bear?” I teased. “Do you imagine that bear is me?” I continued as I lean closer to her face.

“N-No..T-t-t-that’s not what I meant!” She spluttered. I moved back and laughed out loud.

“You’re too easy, Lucky.” I said as I shook my head.

“You’re mean.” I heard her but ignored it. “Anyways, are you ready?” I nodded with determination. We tore off the packet one by one as I put in the cold popsicles. Thank goodness, they are small if not I won’t fit in all of them. Well, some of them are sticking out of my mouth but I can still hold them. She checks her watch. “You have one minute, starting NOW!” I was able to handle the coldness for 10 seconds until I felt sharp pain everywhere in my mouth. I blinked away the tears as I tried to hold it in. After a while, I couldn’t handle it and vomited everything out.

“Alex! That’s gross. Saliva everywhere.” She held a disgusted face as she held one popsicle filled with my saliva.

“I can’t. It’s too damn cold!” I complained. “How long was it?”
