Summary from Goodreads:

In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn't think things could get any worse. But that's before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn't know much about Dax except that he's trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he's not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn't come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn's old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax's side?

Review:

A YA contemporary romance that takes the cake.

When Autumn Collins finds herself unexpectedly locked in the library with Dax Miller, she doesn't think things could get worse. Autumn doesn't know much about Dax except that he is trouble. From his reputation and rumours about his stint in juice, he's not exactly the most ideal person to be stuck in any location with. Hoping, and waiting, for her almost-boyfriend Jeff or one of her close friends to realize that they left her in the library and come to rescue her...only they don't show up. No one does.

It soon becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next few days living off of vending-machine food and getting closer to the one boy who wants nothing to do with her. As Dax and Autumn reluctantly get closer, then not so reluctantly, their each surprised about revelations that they never shared with anyone before. However, can their feelings for each other last once the weekend is over and everything threatens to pull Autumn away from Dax?

There is a minor love triangle and friendship is an important theme. There are some really important themes within this charming novel, such as friendship, child neglect, feeling lonely, learning to trust again, and dealing with mental illness.

I absolutely adored every character in this book and found them to be, mostly, easily relatable. My two favourite characters throughout the novel, unsurprisingly, were Autumn and Dax. I liked Autumn mostly because she was easily relatable, especially since she sufferers from an anxiety disorder and panic attacks. Dax...well Dax was just so freakin' cute!

I think what made me like this book so much more is that Kasie West knows how to take things slow. By giving Autumn and Dax the opportunity to know each other, the love that later developed felt both true and touching. When Kasie excluded physical intimacy, it made it easier to see Autumn and Dax's reasons for falling for one another. Instead of focusing on lust and physical attraction we were able to see how they emotionally connected to one another and create a good relationship.

Overall, this was a cute and charming book to read. I highly recommend you pick it up as soon as possible. Seriously, don't even think about it, just order it and anticipate the feelings that you will get reading By Your Side.
