Luke's point of view

I woke up when the alarm clock buzzed, I hit the snooze button and tried to roll over and go back to sleep. Before I could my mom opened my bedroom door and said, "Come on get up you have to go to school."

I groaned but I got out of bed and started to get ready. When I was ready I walked out to the kitchen where my mom was making breakfast.  She was frying eggs. While I waited for the eggs to finish cooking be I was thinking about how I would rather not go to school. I don't usually do very well in school since I have dyslexia and ADHD.

What makes it worse is that some of the other kids bully me, and I can't respond without getting detention. Since my mom is a teacher my reputation for getting into trouble certainly doesn't help hers.  My mind wandered to my father. I can't really remember him other than a warm feeling like the barest trace of his smile. I didn't like to ask mom about him since it would usually upset her, I don't think she ever got over him. When I did ask she would never give me a straight answer. Even though I figured I would get the same answer as every other time, I decided to try again.

I asked, "Mom how old was I when Dad left?"

She responded, "He left before you were born but he did visit you once."

This statement confused me, that didn't really fit with the feeling I had like I had seen him due to the feeling I had  I'd always assumed that I'd seen him more than once.

Continuing my mom said, "he helped me choose your name but he left before you were born, but after you were born he did come back to visit you once."

I had one more question to ask before I would be satisfied, I asked: "Why didn't he stay with us? Did he not care about us? was he afraid of being a father? or did he find some other woman attractive?"

I was kind of shocked when her reply came in the form of a shout, she hardly ever yells at me. She said "Luke Charles Smith! Don't say such things about your father, he is a good man, kind, loyal, I have never met another man like him before or since."

I knew it would probably be smarter to shut my mouth but I couldn't stop myself from saying, "If he is so loyal than why isn't he here why didn't he stay with us?"

when she responded I could tell my mom was on the brink of tears. She said, "He had no choice but to leave he was in the navy and he was sent out on a mission. He managed to come back to see you once, but I haven't heard from him since then and that was shortly after you were born."

"So he's dead?" I asked.

she said, "No not dead lost at sea."

If that was the case I couldn't see how he could still be alive after twelve years, but I dropped the subject. My mom was already close to crying, and I didn't want to make her feel any worse.

After we ate breakfast I headed off to school, the only good thing about school was my friend Sam, and the older kids bullied us both. They bullied Sam because he was disabled, he had some kind of muscular disease in his legs, and he had a note saying he didn't have to participate in PE.  We are each other's only friends, I try to shield him from the worst of the bullying.

I got to school thinking oh well at least this is the last day, and I might actually get through a year without getting kicked out, unfortunately, I think I jinxed myself.  Our first class was English oh joy, note sarcasm. After sitting through math and science it was time for PE.

I had noticed that the group of kids that usually bullied us was larger than usual, we ended up playing volleyball.  Our teacher separated us into different teams, she supervised us for a while, but she eventually went into her office when another teacher came in to speak with her.

The games went normally until my teammate missed the ball, he was about to go get it when one of the new kids grew in size until it was quite obvious that he wasn't a kid at all, I'm pretty sure that he wasn't even human.   In his hand materialized an obviously metal ball the size of a cannon ball with holes in it, fire bubbled out of the holes.  Moments after the first creature changed the second new kid changed as well.  When the new kids changed everyone scattered trying to find places to hide, some stayed where they were standing frozen in fear.

the creature that I had been playing against hurled their ball toward my teammate. I knew that if the kid was hit by that thing they would be dead, not to mention that it would probably destroy part of the gym.  I just stood there and watched as the ball flew toward the guy that most of the other kids would classify as a nerd. I wanted to do something but I couldn't think of anything to do I stood there and suddenly I got this weird feeling in my stomach, the ball suddenly flew backwards toward the creature that threw it. Since it hadn't been expecting it the ball hit it in the chest and the creature disintegrated into a pile of gold dust.  I honestly don't have a clue what was going on, or what those things are.

The one remaining creature looked at me he said "Spawn of time, your father killed us now I have come for my revenge"

What was that thing talking about? My dad killed it, then how is it here?  Anyway, there was one thing that was quite clear we were all in danger.  By that point, I had gotten a pretty good look at the two creatures they were sort of humanlike but they were taller and they were much rougher looking, they also had tattoos on their arms.

I was wondering what I could possibly do to get out of this situation something dawned on me. A couple of days before my twelfth birthday a man with black hair and sea green eyes came up to me and gave me a gold ring with a blue stone in it saying that when I am in great need tap the gem and I would find help.

I had tried to refuse the gift but the man insisted. Now seemed like a good time to use it. I did what he had said and there was no longer a ring on my finger, now there was a sword that looked like it was made out of bronze in my hand.     Before I could think about how the ring had turned into a sword the creature got ready to throw his ball at me I ducked under it and it landed creating a crater in the back of the gym. Even though I had managed to avoid being burned to death I had still felt the heat as the ball passed over my head.

Now the creature had lost his weapon. I'm not sure what made me do it but before the creature could summon another ball I ran at him, when I got close enough to him he tried to grab me. I ducked and then stabbed him in the stomach with my sword. I could see Sam watching from a short distance away standing frozen in place with wide eyes.  The creature disintegrated like the other one had.

Of course just my luck that's when the two teachers decided to come out of the office. When they saw the crater on the floor our teacher said, "What happened here?" of course one of the bullies, Jeff Sloan, came forward and pinned it on me when In reality I had probably just saved their lives. Sam gave me a Look that said let's get out of here, I didn't argue. My first thought as we were leaving was my mom's going to kill me.
