Caught in the Rain

Chase POV

It was getting dark out. Clouds loomed overhead, threatening a storm. "So...do I have like some magic power over the weather too?" Valerie asked Xavier as we started heading back to my car after a long day of training.

I rolled my eyes at the two of them. I hated the way her eyes lit up whenever she looked at him, and the way his arm was playfully wrapped around her shoulder. I wanted nothing more than to stab him with my dagger, but I wasn't going to get that lucky again. "All Enchantresses have some sort of influence over nature." Xavier explained to her. Who did he think he was? He inserted himself into her life out of nowhere and all the sudden is acting as if he is an Elder himself? If he were that great of a Protector then why couldn't he keep his own Enchantress alive? I wanted to scream this at him, rub it in his smug little face, but I couldn't get myself to say the words out loud. Xavier bent down and plucked a dandelion out of the ground. He handed it over to Valerie.

"What am I supposed to do with this?" She chuckled, brushing back her blonde hair that blew in the wind. I could see her cheeks staining a slight red, and I noticed that she kept biting her bottom lip whenever she talked to him. She liked him. How do I know? Because she used to do the same exact things for me.

"Curl the dandelion in your fist and close your eyes." Xavier told her.

"It's going to start raining soon." I tried to remind them, but they both ignored me. Why did Valerie listen to him and not me? What does Xavier have that I don't? A small drop of water trickled down my head. It would only take a couple more minutes before we got stormed down on.

Valerie gasped when she opened her eyes, uncurling her fist to reveal the dandelion's transformation into a flower. "Can you show me what else I can do?" She wondered eagerly, her technicolor eyes sparkling in awe.

I tried to remind myself that I had no reason to be jealous of them. It wasn't like I could be with Valerie--the Elders had already seen to that--but I couldn't help but feel a slight discomfort coming from my scar. It just didn't feel right to see her with someone else. It sounds cliche, but if I can't have her, then no one can. Xavier was supposed to be my friend. Had that all just been a ruse so that he could learn more about Valerie? Was he just using me so that he could replace me as her Protector? "We really should get going." I interrupted them again, this time not even bothering to hide the annoyance in my voice. Valerie and Xavier whipped their heads around towards me, as if they had just remembered that I was here. And when they did, it was as if a faucet had been turned on from the sky. The rain poured down hard and fast. Valerie giggled, holding Xavier's hand and sprinting alongside him as they ran to the car.

I ran behind them, trying to ignore the burning in my scar. The scar connected me to Valerie's powers, allowing me to feel what she feels. I was trying to resist the warm feeling swelling inside the scar, which caused a slight stinging sensation. I didn't want to feel the happiness she was feeling in this moment as she intertwined her hand with Xavier's. The rain pelted down on us like hail, dripping down her skin and flattening her hair. She tilted her chin up towards the sky, opening her mouth and slurping up the rain drops with her tongue.

Nature was hers to control, and she gained power from being around the other elements. "Come on!" Xavier tugged on her arm, laughing as the rain drizzled down his face.

"I want to try something." She told him, raising both her arms into the air. Xavier and I watched her--our Enchantress--as the rain clouded our vision. A huge grin swept across Valerie's face, and I could feel a surge of energy rippling through my scar and into my own body. She clenched her fists together, and a huge crack of lightning thundered across the sky.

For the first time all day, Xavier glanced in my direction. Did she do that? Was she even supposed to be capable of doing that? "Let's get out of here." Valerie smiled, grabbing his hand and pulling him with her as she pranced across the grassy field.

I waited a couple seconds before following after them. I wondered to myself, just how powerful was Valerie, and how long would it take for the Lawless to discover her abilities? I stared up at the part of the sky where the lightning had struck across then adjusted my gaze back towards her and Xavier. They were banging on the exterior of my car, waving their arms up in the air like crazy, and begging for me to unlock the doors.

But before I opened the doors, one more question lingered in my mind: would we be enough to protect her?
