Section l: The Rise - Chapter 12 • The Ring, The Card, & The Plant

Start from the beginning

"It's not like you to say sorry

I was waiting on a different story

This time I'm mistaken

For handing you a heart worth breaking

And I've been wrong, I've been down

Been to the bottom of every bottle

These five words in my head

Scream, "Are we having fun yet?""

Fire. That's the best way to describe it. Just pure fire that infected her voice, eyes, soul. She looks like Viona, acts like her too, but she embeds raw fear into me and I've only been standing her a minute.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no

Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no"

I could see her sanity slipping with a devil's smile. Viona looked directly at me, and in that moment, I saw two things; Ruth, and a demon. Both were polar opposites, but resided in one body.

She continued singing, and as she did so, she changed. I watched with breath caught in my throat as her hair turned brown, freckles returned to her face, and the tattoos faded away to reveal the woman I lost years ago. Viona was gone, and now Ruth's eyes were matching mine, sending chills down my spine.

"It's not like you didn't know that

I said I love you and I swear I still do

And it must have been so bad

Cause living with me must have damn near killed you

And this is how you remind me

Of what I really am

This is how you remind me

Of what I really am"

Tears began to rush down her face, and for whatever reason, they built in my eyes as well. Imagine, seeing a woman you loved over forty years ago, with all her wounds open and bleeding again. That is no exaggeration either. Every scar Viona and Ruth have gathered is reopening right in front of me, fresh blood running out and down on her... er, their clothes.

"It's not like you to say sorry

I was waiting on a different story

This time I'm mistaken

For handing you a heart worth breaking

And I've been wrong, I've been down

Been to the bottom of every bottle

These five words in my head

Scream, "Are we having fun yet?"

Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no

Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no

Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no

Yeah, yeah, yeah

No, no"

I get it now. As she sings to me through blood, sweat, and tears, I get it.

"Never made it as a wise man

I couldn't cut it as a poor man stealing

And this is how you remind me

This is how you remind me"

I'm a utter fuck up. Something I knew before, but it's clear now. I fucked up, but it was more than just hurting myself.
