Chapter 1

::Shannon::

"Shannon!" my mom called my name from downstairs.

I groaned and put my pillow over my head. Can't a girl sleep in on her 18th birthday?!

"Shannon!!!!!"

Apparently not.

"Ugh." I slowly got up, rubbing my eyes. Still half-asleep, I trudged down the stairs and into the kitchen, where my mom was holding a brown parcel in her hand. She shook it and frowned.

"Mom, what are you doing?"

She handed me the parcel. "This came for you, I think. Since it's your birthday I think some one sent it to you."

I stared at the parcel in my hand. "It doesn't have my name on it," I shook it too. Something rattled inside.

My mom shrugged and grabbed her car keys. "but it's your birthday, someone probably sent it as a gift. I don't know. I have to go to work, sweetie. You can skip school if you want. Happy birthday." she kissed me lightly on the cheek and left.

I quickly got a knife and cut throught the brown paper that covered the parcel.

It revealed a white box, about the size of my whole hand. I opened it eagerly and nearly fainted.

Five medium sized white champagne diamonds rested in a soft, sponge-like cushion. They were white with a slight to bold flashes of pink when viewed from the top. I thought back to middle school, and remembered doing a project about different types of rocks, crystals and diamonds.

"Pink is one of the most rare colours found in diamonds, and cost a lot depending on it's strength and depth," my teacher had once said.

I was dumbfounded.

"Oh my god." I breathed out, and gently and carefully lifted one beautiful diamond out of the box. "Oh my god."

::Jay::

I walked down the silent street. The full moon was camoflauged by the clouds, and the only light was coming from the street lamps. Someone coughed, and with my cat-like attention spam I snapped my head up from my feet and looked around.

Relief washed over me when I noticed it was only a homeless man, covered in dirty blankets by the alley.

And then I felt a sudden pain in my back, and went sprawling. I hit the wet ground, hard, but recovered fast, before my attacker had the chance to strike again.

I rolled away and quickly got up. Blocking a punch from my attacker, I kicked him twice but before I could punch him, he took a step back and reached in his pocket.

A knife.

He swiped at me with his knife, the blade nearly cutting me. I cursed as I tried to find a weapon too, but I had nothing. Martial arts it is, then.

I kicked his feet out from under him. When he was laying on the ground, I got on top of him and starting punching him, but forgot about his knife. The blade penetrated through my skin and into my thigh. I screamed and stood up, and the man got out from under me. I staggered back, holding my thigh. Taking deep breaths, I quickly pulled out the knife with slightly shaking hands and looked at the man.

He was short but fit. He was wearing a black and red mask, though the colours were barely noticable in the dark. I approached him with his knife, limping.

He blocked my attempts at stabbing him, but I punched him right on the jaw and the impact made him lean back, and he grabbed his head.

I hit him, again and again. He was shaken from my punch.

"A person who is knocked out by a punch to the jaw suffers a severe concussion. It can take anywhere from several seconds to several minutes to regain consciousness. So, don't forget Jay. A punch to the jaw goes a long way," Chad told me when I joined his gang.

He was right. The man fell back, down onto the ground, and I hit him a few more times, just to make sure he was unconscious. Then I dropped his knife, and grabbed my phone out of my pocket.

"Chad? Come get me, there's been a, uh, accident."

When I told him where I was, I snapped my phone shut and put it back into my pocket. I took off my jacket and tied it strongly over my bleeding thigh, wincing. I limped over to the beat up dude and searched his jacket for his wallet.

I found it, and read his ID.

"Liam Walter,"

He had his car keys with him, and I grabbed them and threw them away, into a drain. I was about to do the same to his phone when it started ringing in my hand.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Liam?" I recognised the deep voice to be Derek's, Chad's brother.

"Oh, sorry, he's too busy being unconscious to answer his phone right now. Want me to pass on a message that I won't actually pass on?"

"Jay." he growled.

"That's me, assh*le."

"I swear, if I get my hands on you-"

"You tried to kill me!"

"I told you, if you make a deal and don't keep to it then there'll be serious consequences-"

"What are you talking about, we sent you the freakin' diamonds a week ago!"

"You didn't, kiddo."

"Don't call me that." I snapped.

"No diamonds arrived, therefore the deal was broken. You gotta play by the rules, Jay."

"I am. The diamonds were shipped off a week ago!"

"You're lying. But I'll give you another chance, seeing as your my brother's apprentice. If the diamonds aren't here in 3 weeks time, then I'll find a more qualified man to do the job of killing you. And Chad."

"But we don't have any more diamonds-"

"Too bad. Tick, tock, tick tock. A deals a deal, Jay. Get me my diamonds, or you're dead. And not just you and Chad but the rest of your pitiful gang too. Clock's ticking!"

The line went dead.

I cursed loudly and threw the phone away.

I only realised the homeless man then, who was watching me with wide eyes.

I gave him a smirk and handed him the wallet of my attacker.

"here, there might be some cash in there."

And then Chad's Porsche pulled up and I got in.

Chad looked down at my thigh.

"I was attacked." I said, before he could answer.

"What's new." he started driving.

"It was Derek,"

"What?” Chad scowled. "Why would he try to kill you?!"

"He didn't get his diamonds."

"what?!"

I shrugged.

"But we sent them to him a little over a week ago!"

"He didn't get them,"

"That's impossible! Where the f*ck can they be then?!"

I shrugged again.

"We need to go to Arizona. That's where we sent them, right?"

"Yeah but-"

"I'll have Finn try to locate the parcel tomorrow."

I nodded. "Okay."

"But until then, we have to take a look at your leg,"
