You awoke to the sound of music, piano music to be exact. It was soft and relaxing, almost like a lullaby to lull a child to a sleep. The morning sun’s rays shone through the cracks behind the curtains, blinding your eyes. Squinting, you turned over onto your stomach to face an empty bedside, which once was occupied by your boyfriend. As your eyes adjusted to the light, you ran your hand over the empty space; it was still warm indicating that it wasn’t long since he had left. You smiled at the thought and memory of him sleeping beside you, also by the frame that rested that rested on the oak bedside table.

It held a photo of you and him together in a rose garden smiling at each other. It was your first date, it was also the day he first told you he liked you, the photo thanks to one of his friends who decided to tag along that day. Still dazed from the morning, you sat up and took a hold of the framed polaroid and smiled at the caption written below.

‘Hopefully I will get to see your beautiful smile everyday’ ~ Joonmyun.

He wrote that when you got home that evening. That was also when you shared your first kiss. ‘How cliché you thought to yourself.‘To kiss on the front door step.’ You laughed softly at the memory and fell back onto the bed, holding the photograph close to your chest and rapidly beating heart. It was at this point that the piano music you previously heard got louder.

“____ and Joonmyun, together side by side.

I am so happy now, because she is only mine.”

You laughed inwards at his makeshift song that incorporated both your names. Joonmyun, even at the thought of his name sent butterflies in your stomach. It felt the same as when you first met and stared into his dark chocolate eyes. It was a mid-winters day during a snow storm where you took shelter in the library. He spotted you sitting by a bay window with your nose in your favourite book. He sat next to you and gave you small glances and jokingly asked if you liked books. Since then, you two hit it off. It stated with simple text messages, then to calls and finally when he got the courage to ask you out, and saying “I like you.” That was a year ago. One year of dates, kisses. Six months later you were moving in with him. The only thing is though, neither one of you has told the other ‘I love you.’ It was only a sentence, right?

Smiling at the fond memories, and Joonmyun’s cheesy tune, you tip-toed back into your bedroom. Since only just waking up, you were in dire need of a shower. You entered the room and shuffled around the room for clothing; being it handy that both you and Joonmyun have the habit of leaving clothes on the floor, clean or dirty. As the room was still dim from the closed curtains, you went straight for the nearest pile of clothes and fished out a shirt and a pair of shorts, not caring if they weren’t yours. You stepped into the bathroom and jumped in the shower so keen about the warm water to wake up your half-asleep body.

After a few minutes of relaxation, you forced yourself to step out into the steamy bathroom, dried your hair and changed into the clothing you brought with you. The shorts fit right, but the shirt felt slightly bigger than usual. With a shrug of your shoulders, you left the bathroom as you didn’t care whether or not the shirt fit. You felt comfortable around Joonmyun enough you could walk out in a dirty tracksuit with messy hair and he will still call you beautiful.

You headed down the hallway to the stairs only to hear silence, no piano music. ‘He must’ve heard the shower,’you thought to yourself as you quietly floated down each step to the landing below. As you suspected, no Joonmyun sitting at the piano. You gave a small frown as you wondered where you boyfriend could be. Your question was answered when you heard clanking coming from the kitchen adjacent from you, which only became louder when you neared the open doorway.

You leaned against the wall and watched Joonmyun make your favourite vanilla cappuccino, whilst he made his usual espresso for himself.  You couldn’t help but gaze heavily at his back that faced you. His short cut light brown hair, now slightly growing, was messy, and the back hid behind the frame defining sweater. Your eyes travelled down his torso, past his waist, thighs, all the way to his bare feet. To think, he was all yours.

“Is my back that attractive?” You jumped at his words. Your cover was blown because of the eyes on the back of his head.

“Always is,” you smiled. “Remember, two sugars.” He turned around and eyed you as he placed two spoons of sugar into your cup before stirring it, his signature smile plastered over his face. Once again you got lost in his eyes.

 “Sweet as always,” you grinned.

“But you love it.”

“Yeah I know,” you both laugh. “You had breakfast yet?”

“Not yet, but that’s only because I know that you know how much I love your cooking.” You chuckled, placing the cup of coffee on the white marble bench top and moving to take out utensils and ingredients to start on breakfast.

At the same time, Joonmyun leaned back on the island and stared down your back, like you did to him previously. His eyes travelled from your long brown hair that cascaded down your lean back, to your toned legs not covered by the shorts. He couldn’t help but stare at the perfection he saw in front of him. Not a single flaw in his eyes. He did find however something in your attire and sighed, not really thinking about what came out of his mouth next.

“I love you.” This made you drop the knife you were holding and turned around slowly to see Joonmyun with the same surprised look as you had. The two of you just stared at each other, the silence so thick it can be cut with a knife.

“What?” you broke the silence, still eyeing Joonmyun.

“Uh-um,” he stuttered. “I-uh said um. What I meant was that I love you, in my shirt.” He looked to the ground to hide the red tint forming in his cheeks.

Confused, you glanced down and realised why the shirt was larger on you. You wore his baby blue dress shirt that bore thin white pinstripes. You laughed at the confusion and looked towards Joonmyun, whose gaze was still glued to the tiled floor.

“Is that all?” you asked, hoping what he had originally said was true.

Joonmyun fidgeted and tucked his hands in his sweater pockets. “Do you want that to be all?”

“I don’t know,” he looked to you as he bit his bottom lip nervously. You just leaned back on the counter, waiting for a reply.

“I didn’t think I’d be doing it this way,” he ran his fingers through his hair with a laugh. You continued to stare at him confusingly.

“I meant what I said before ____,” Joonmyun breathed, taking a few steps closer towards you. “I honestly do not know why I haven’t said it before.” He kept moving forward until he closed the distance between you and him, pressing his body against yours. He was so close, you could practically fell he racing heartbeat inside his chest.

He rested his forehead upon your own and placed his hands on either side of your waist, enabling you to move away. He inhaled deeply and exhaled the words you were waiting to hear.

“I love you, ____.”

Your heart did backflips. Butterflies appeared in your stomach.

“I have wanted to say that for so long,” he sighed while your entire being danced in excitement.

“I guess it’s only fair to say the same,” you laughed along with him, wrapping your arms around his neck.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that,” Joonmyun smirked at you which caused you to smirk widely in return.

“You idiot,” you said. “I love you too Joonmyun.”

That was all it took for him to press his lips firmly against yours in a loving kiss. You smiled against his lips, tightening your grip on his neck as he pulled you even closer. The kiss wasn’t deep, but filled with the love and happiness you both felt.

After a short while, Joonmyun pulled back and the both of you caught your breaths. There wasn’t much to say, the kiss was more than enough

“It was the first one I grabbed,” you said.

“Yes Joonie?”

He leaned in closer to you and let his hand glide underneath the shirt and up your bare side. “I love it when you’re not wearing one,” he whispered before parting your lips into a deep kiss. You let out a small moan as e guided you out of the kitchen and up the stairs, both with wide smirks on your faces.

Joonmyun’s going to have breakfast, but it’s not going to be bacon and eggs…
