crumbling, charred hearts,
reluctantly still beating.
chains around their souls.
maggots called self-hatred are eating
slowly away at their minds.
---
GLOWING, SMILING HEARTS,
RESOLUTELY STILL BEATING.
HALOS AROUND THEIR SOULS.
EVERY DAY DEFEATING
THE DARK THAT LINGERS NEARBY.
---
Humanity's variety
Will contradict propriety,
So burn the concept entirely.
---
You are one in the same
With those you love and loathe.
Can you Hear their Heartbeats?
---
Can you feel us, pulsing as one?
We're in this together,
Like it or not.
---
Those you hate have those they love.
Those you love have flaws.
Remember the pain of strangers.
---
Humanity is the strongest rope.
It binds us all
Accept it.
---
If you embrace a human
Even the bruised ones,
You'll find your hearts both beat.
---
Reluctant.
Or resolute.
There is their pulse.
---
Humans make mistakes
Can you Hear their Heartbeats?
Can you Hear their Heartbeats?

***Not my most well-written poem--I had some trouble with wording, and how to convey that I knew other animals had heartbeats but that wasn't quite what I meant.
I hope my meaning got across, but I'll leave it up to interpretation.
And also--THANK YOU. Those of you who read and vote for and comment on my poems, you have no idea how much it means to me. ♡
