14.HIS LADY (edited)

Start from the beginning

"But sir you are my boss, I can't just sit and—"

"And as your boss I demand you to sit down and have lunch with me" I demanded her.

Without hesitating any further, she walked back into the dining room, pulled out a chair to sit. For the next ten minutes, we stayed quiet and said nothing to each other. The silence was over bearing and the only sound that was heard was of us chewing our food.

Come on Cindy say something. I mentally cheered for her to speak but I knew that it was of no use.

"Sir the delivery man came and dropped off all the items we brought for your friend" I looked up as Cindy informed me.

Yes! She spoke.

"Oh! I nearly forgot about that"

"Yes, the cloths are in my room. I didn't put them in yours, because I didn't want to enter your private quarters"

"Oh, do you still like the cloths?" I asked her. Immediately her face lit up and the sparkles in her eyes reappeared.

"Yes sir, I'm pretty sure your friend will love it. When is your friend coming, because I have to gather the cloths, place them all in the guest room and I also—".

"Cindy stops, Relax" I asked her.

I could not help myself. I have always been an honest man but the truth felt so heavy on my tongue. I knew I had to tell Cindy the truth and now would be the best time to do so.

"Cindy there is no friend" I confessed to her.

"I don't understand what you mean?" Cindy asked me innocently and that just made me feel guilty. I placed my sandwich back onto my plate, ran my hands through my ruffled hair and sighed deeply.

"I brought the cloths and all those accessories for you. I knew you wouldn't allow me buy it for you, that is why I told you that it was for my friend"

"In other words you lied to me?"

"No I didn't —" I stopped myself before I could say anything that could have made the situation any worse than it already was.

I watched as Cindy picked up her plate, deposited it in the sink and walked up the steps. I stayed planted on my seat, because I felt so heavy. I sat there all by myself, trying to think of a better way to dissolve this problem.

I sat alone after Cindy had left the table and even then, I could not eat, leaving me to abandon my food and walk away from the table. To my surprise as I approached the steps, Cindy was headed down with shopping bags in her hand and she dumped it onto the steps.

"I'm done" She told me and I struggled to understand what it was that she was trying to say.

"Cindy, what do you think you're doing?"

"Well, I'm returning your things to you" She confessed, not looking too pleased with me.

"Cindy I brought them for you and I'd like it if you would accept them"

"Sir I'm pretty sure that with the amount of money you pay me I can afford my own clothes, shoes ex cetera" Cindy explained to me but that was not enough to put me at ease.

My patience was running thin with her stubbornness, but was the reason why I loved her. Cindy was unlike any other woman that I have met before, she was stubborn and she could stand on her own two feet.

"Cindy, just take the damn cloths!" I scolded at her. I watched tears, danced in her eyes but she refused to have them fall.

"Why should you demand me sir?" She asked me.

"Because you work for me, I'm your boss and you're my slave!" I yelled at her and I immediately regretted my words.

"Well at least we've established where slaves like me belong"

I could not help but feel a burning pain run through my chest. I had hurt her and I could see it written all over her face.

"Cindy, I'm so—"

"Sorry? It's so funny that all you men say the same damn thing, but the truth is you all lie!" She yelled at the top of her lungs at me.

"Cindy I didn't lie I just— okay I did lie but—"

"But what sir? You know, you're just like my uncle and Nyemi, you care about no one's self-respect!"

This time I could see the tears falling from her eyes. She quickly climbed up the steps, I tried to grab her but she was too fast for me. I followed her to her room to unlock the door.

Shit! it is locked.

"Cindy please unlock the door. Cindy I'm begging you please". I banged the door harder but she did not budge. I pressed my back against the door and sunk to the floor, I could not believe it. I had up set her.

You cannot be with her; she is a house cleaner, a servant... a slave.

—No she is not! She is the love of my life.

I could not help myself but fight with my conscious but what I could not believe was that I actually called her, the love of my life. I fell in love with Cindy all along; I just did not want to accept that, a lawyer like me could love someone out of my privileged background.

Whether I like it or not, I was and am still in love with Cindy ... My Cindy and I am not going to give up on her not the today.
