You looked around the hall, desperate to find your class. You knew you shouldn't have let your mother slip through your fingers and to her boyfriend's house! If she was here, things would be much easier.
You sighed, and walked over to a grey haired boy, who seemed nice enough. He had a pretty boy face, though.
You tap on his shoulder, making him turn around to meet your gaze. He smiled softly.
"What is it? Do you need help?" He asked. You were surprised at how soft his voice was, like velvet. You always examined people's voices. Shyly, you nodded, and pointed to your times table, where your class was. "Oh? You need to find your class?" Again, you nodded. "Well you're in luck, Ms.[l.n], I have the same homeroom." You smiled, glad that he read your name on the paper other than ask for it. It wasn't like you could respond, anyways.
As the two of you walked down the hallway to your class, Yuki, that's what he said his name was, asked you a few questions.
"Are you new?" You nodded. He was suspicious about how you weren't talking so far, but he guessed it was because you were shy. He was sure you had a pretty voice.
"Are you excited to be in our school?" You nodded again, except you met his eyes instead of looking at the floor. Yuki smiled at you, and pointed to the sign above the door. 1-D.
"Here we are, Ms.[l.n]." Before going into the classroom, you bowed in appreciation, then you entered the room. You were introduced to the class, where thankfully the teacher did not tell the class about your condition. Actually, you weren't sure if even your teacher knew. Shouldn't the school board keep up with stuff like that?
"Alright, class, you can have the last... ten minutes to yourselves. Goof off, get rid of homework, whatever you see fit," The teacher announced at the end of class, making you sigh deeply. You had managed one whole day of school, and people still didn't think you were a freak. Good.
You opened your notebook, beginning to draw, before you heard several different footsteps coming your way.
"Miss.[l.n],"
Ah, Yuki, it's you. I never got to thank you.
You smiled at the seemingly popular boy, and noticed his other friends.
Who are these?
Seeing your confusion, the brunette girl introduced herself. "I'm Torhu Honda! This one is Kyo Sohma." Your eyes met with an angry red pair, taking you in by shock. Tohru's voice was angelic and careful, and it somehow reminded you of a gentle wave at the beach. "What's your name?"
You blushed, and looked down at your sketchbook. That wasn't a yes or no question.
"It's [f.n] [l.n]." Yuki said for you, making you smile thankfully up at him.
"Why'd you have to answer it for her, you damn rat?! She can talk!" Kyo suddenly blurted, and Yuki's soft eyes turned into a glare. You didn't know such soft, kind eyes could do that.
"I'm not saying she can't."
"Well?! Talk will ya?!" Kyo shouted at you, his temper rising over edge.
"Shut it you damn cat, she will do as she pleases. She's just shy."
Shy. Huh. You wished that was the case.
"Guys, calm down!"
"What? I'm just asking a simple question! It's not like she can't!"
You tried hard to focus on your paper, you really did, but you ended up silently butting into the conversation. You shook your head, making everyone look at you. They didn't get it. You sighed, and wrote down words onto your paper, then showed it to them.
Hello, my name is [L.n] [F.n]. I am mute. That means I have the inavailability to talk. Do any of you know sign language?
A movement of hands caught you by surprise. It was Kyo's.
Sorry for my rudeness. I was unaware.
You smiled up at him. While his signs were clumsy, he was talking with you.
It is OK, this is usually the case. Where did you learn sign language?
"That's amazing, Kyo, where did you learn sign language?" Tohru asked, making you laugh. Kyo smiled slightly, his eyes still trained on you. He spoke to his friend with his voice as he talked to you through his hands.
"While I was up on the mountains, training, to beat that damn rat. Looks like I beat him in one way though," He stopped speaking, but kept his hands moving as a silent message to you. Because I get to talk to you and he can't.
That made you laugh, and a blush spread on Kyo's cheeks.
Speak for me, Kyo?
Why?
I just need to see something.
The group kept staring at you two, wondering what was going on that caused Kyo to smile so much. "Hi, my name is Kyo and my lifelong dream is to beat that damn rat, Yuki. He's freaking annoying, you know! The way he--" Raising his voice, you interrupting him while you giggled.
All right, all right, that's enough.
He scratched the back of his orange head. "Sorry, got riled up." The cat shrugged, and the group got even more confused. You sat in thought, before coming up with a conclusion.
Misunderstood, but caring, like an abandoned cat. That's what your voice tells me. Your voice is one I could get used to listening too, Kyo-kun.
His cheeks flushed, shoving his hands into his pockets and kicking imaginary dust on the floor. "Yeah, yeah."
For once, you felt lucky that your voice wasn't there.
