The Missing Link (a Harry Potter reader insert story)

New Pet

You and Cancer had returned from shopping for your books, and you were happy to make new friends. Akane was ready go with you to get the last two things you needed, a pet and a wand. When Akane had heard that you didn't have a wand yet she was surprised, and very enthusiastic about helping you pick out one. So while Cancer went home with his siblings, you and Akane were finishing up your shopping.

"So, what kind of pet do I need to get?" You were curios to know what new little creature you would be harboring, for you really liked animals.

"Well there are a lot of options, but usually people stick to the main three." She held up three fingers and smiled brightly before continuing.

"Most people have an owl, cause it can bring them letters, but if you don't get one the school has some random owl deliver them to you. Then there's cats, which are pretty good for transfiguration, and really great for cuddling! And the last ones a toad, I personally don't like em, but some people do I guess. Anyway you can any pet you like, so don't let my opinion sway you." When she was finally done speaking, you had already arrived at the pet store, and you were amazed at all the different kinds of animals in the cages. Akane held the door open for you, just like she had when you were buying robes, and then you both walked in. The store smelled like a farm, but you didn't let it bother you, since all the animals were so cool.

"I'm gonna go look at the kittens, so look around and try to choose a pet." She pointed to a glass box filled with kittens, and then trotted off, leaving you with all the animals. You heard a loud "Squawk!" Behind you and turned around, only to see a light brown owl, with white spots all over, and big hazel eyes. The owl landed on a perch beside you, and blinked a few times.

"You're very pretty." You felt sort of silly, since you talking to a bird, but whatever. The owl nuzzled you with her head and chirped a few times, it was pretty cute.

"You're such a sweet bird." You pet her head and she flapped her wings happily, until she saw a treat that had been left on the ground a flew over to it. You were sort sad, but knew you had to keep looking.

You had walked for a little when you took a step and felt something soft under your foot, and heard a loud Yelp. A cat ran from under you and jumped up on a table, only to hiss at you and bare his teeth.

"Don't be mean, it was only an accident." You pouted and the cat sat down, still glaring at you. He was black and sleek, with glowing yellow eyes that seemed to bore holes in your soul. You reached out your hand to pet his head, but before you touched him he jumped back and arched his back, again hissing.

"Oh come on, I'm trying to apologize you know!" He shrunk back and stopped hissing, and then looked kind of guilty, sad really. You put your hand out again and he flinched, but didn't pull away. His fur was extremely soft, like silk. You stroked down his back and he purred, then stood up and nuzzled his head into your hand.

"See? You like attention, don't you?" He stopped purring and flicked his tail, only to jump off the table and strut away. You continued walking, thinking about which animal to buy, when you heard a loud croak next to you ear.

"Ahh!" The noise scared you, making you jump into the air. You heard a soft "plop" next to you, and saw a green mass on the floor. You knelt down and noticed what it was: a very small frog. You felt very bad for throwing him to the floor, even if it was an accident.

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" You picked out the frog and he opened his tiny eyes. They were a dark blue. He made a soft sound with his throat, then blinked slowly.

"Oh, you poor thing, you rubbed his head a little, making his face swish back and forth. You giggled and put him back into his tank, which he had hopped out of and onto your shoulder.

"Hey! (Y/n)! Ready to buy your pet!" It was Akane, she had come bouncing back from the kittens with a little ginger one in hand, which she said she just bought. O

"Um, just let me think a little." You needed to decide which pet you were gonna get. It was a tough call.

Option 2: the bitter (but actually sweet) cat
Option 3: the cute and tiny frog
