02. Friendship Riding on a Blue Headband

"Neji," Hiashi, Neji's uncle and Head of the Hyuga clan entered the quiet dining room the morning to find the boy sitting at the table having breakfast and tea alone.

"Yes?" Neji curtly responded, even daring himself to glare at his own uncle. Hiashi was the spitting image of Neji's deceased father and the man Neji found responsible for his father's death. Someone he could never forgive.

"There's someone at the door for you," Hiashi informed him in a serious tone. Neji stood up up without asking further questions and headed for the entrance of their compound wondering who would want to speak to him early that morning on a school day.

The moment he neared the entrance and heard the annoying voice he knew. He felt his aggravation surfacing as the two people he disliked the most came into view.

"Wow!" the annoying voice exclaimed," you're Neji's cousin!?"

"Y-y-yes," Hinata whispered with a timid nod," I-I didn't know he had f-friends from school."

"We're not just friends. We're BEST friends!" You said, pumping your fist enthusiastically," yesterday he hit me so hard I went flying like WHOOOSH! And I hit the blackboard so hard Sensei was shocked. I think everyone was!"

Oh god, Neji thought, she came to visit me?!

"Hi Best friend!" You literally hollered with joy, running up to him with Hinata peering from behind curiously at the odd interaction between you and Neji.

"What are you doing here?" Neji asked with a frown, not even greeting you.

"I just thought you might want company on the way to school today," you said, smiling from cheek to cheek. 

"That's the opposite of what I want," Neji grumbled, pulling on his shoes and heading out the door now that his breakfast was interrupted. He would rather deal with you than with Hiashi. You followed behind, shooting Hinata a goodbye on the way out.

"Well I guess I just wanted company," you said, falling into steps with him," after all, nothing beats a good walk with your best friend."

"[name], stop calling me your best friend," Neji demanded in a bored tone," we are not friends, we are not even acquaintances. We are just two people who happen to attend the same academy in the same class."

You slapped your knees while laughing," oh my god Neji! You're killing me with your jokes!" 

"[name], do you even understand what a friend is? A friend is someone you know, someone you bond with, someone you have memories with. Basically, everything we don't have. So I would rather you stop calling me your 'best friend'."

You continue to take every single word the poor boy was spitting out as a joke and threw an arm around his strong shoulders," but we are bonding and making memories right now! And even if we weren't, you're my best friend because I chose you!"

"But I never chose you," he retorted, hoping this would end the conversation once and for all. Instead you beamed up at him with the widest smile a girl could muster.

"Yeah! I know! But I never said I am your best friend! I simply implied that you are mines!" you laughed at your own cleverness and Neji had to admit, it was clever but he would never say it to your face.

"You are a fool," he muttered, mentally face palming himself," why do you insist on being my 'friend' anyways?"

You blushed and wanted to tell him you knew he liked you but decided not to," because I was lonely and you were lonely," you held your hands up and locked them together to emphasize what you were trying to explain," and two lonely people together is better than one lonely person by himself."
