Chapter Sixteen

January 10, 1972 5:37 p.m.
I haven't gotten out of the hospital bed since-well, I don't know when. I walked slowly to the window and sat in the chair that was beside it. I had been sitting there for a while, drawing in my notebook. I wondered what had happened to Raymond. He had said that he would come back. I felt a little tinge of anger. I soon thought of how he had looked a little strained when he had left, and forgave him.

"Esther?" the nurse had appeared beside me. I looked up, a small smile playing with my lips. "Are you doing alright?" she asked. I nodded, and she left.

The sound of sirens reached my ears and I looked below me. I was in the second story, so I could easily see the ambulances coming into the parking lot. I looked, and gasped when I saw who was on a stretcher, being rolled into the hospital. Raymond. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Raymond.
