(Peeta's POV)

The first punch is thrown and knocks me off guard, pain pulsating at my nose, but I don't dare to back down. Not when it's just started.

For a second, I'm worried about Katniss's safety in the midst of the battle, but I am unable to dwell on it for long.

Then the kick comes.

Gale's boot comes in contact with my stomach and I drop to the ground, nauseated. "Gale, stop it! You're killing him," Katniss cries, but he doesn't listen.

All he does to her is smack her, setting me off, giving me a reason to fight.

I get to my feet and I throw a punch at Gale's face, hitting him square in the jaw. "Don't you dare hurt her, or I'll slit your throat in your sleep, got it?"

He smirks and nods, turning and leaving.

I begin panting in exhaustion and collapse to the ground, nauseated and bleeding.

Katniss rushes to me, helping me back up. "Here, I'll get my mother. You lay down."

She kisses my forehead after helping me to lay down and rushes from the room, leaving me alone.

The nausea overcomes me and I just make it to the toilet before everything comes out.

It finally stops about a minute later and I sit on the floor, groaning, with my arms folded protectively over my stomach.

"He's in here," I hear Katniss say and the bathroom door creaks open and I see her and her mother.

"Peeta, you poor thing. You can't catch a break, can you?" Katniss says, sitting beside me and stroking my hair.

"Get him into the bedroom and I'll fix him up," Mrs. Everdeen tells her daughter and walks back into the adjoining room.

Katniss helps me back up and into the bedroom, once again helping me lay down on the bed.

"Sleep syrup," Mrs. Everdeen orders to her daughter once she examines my condition.

Katniss pulls it out and her mother puts it into a syringe and injects it into my neck, knocking me out on the spot, just like it had in the last Games.

I open my eyes and see my wife dabbing at my forehead. "Hey, baby boy. How you feelin'?"

I groan. "Not well."

She frowns and presses a gentle kiss to my cheek. "Then I'll stay right here. I'm not leaving your side. Ever. No matter how many times they may beckon."

"Even if it's needed?" I ask.

Katniss sighs. "Of course."

I smile weakly at her. "What ended up of my stomach injury?"

"Punctured rib. Gale looked to have kicked pretty hard, and he obviously did as a result," she answers and frowns at her own words.

"What about Annabelle?" I ask, suddenly worried about my daughter.

"Prim has her, and don't worry. They won't let anything happen to her," Katniss reassures me and I'm finally able to relax.

"Okay. Great," I tell her.

Then I hear the poor baby crying.

"I think she wants her daddy," I hear Prim say and I turn my head to see her standing in the doorway with the crying infant squirming around in her arms.

I manage to lean up and Prim comes over and sets Annabelle into my arms, the baby immediately calming down.

"She's a daddy's girl," Prim jokes as I admire my daughter who stares right back up at me, trying to grab my nose.

"You're a good girl," I tell her and she gurgles as she smiles.

I turn and see Katniss smiling herself. "I think we should leave them alone, little duck."

Her sister nods and the two of them get up and leave, shutting the door behind them.

Annabelle begins to get a little uncomfortable, maybe because her mother just left the room.

"Hey, Daddy's still here. And I'm never letting you go, my baby girl," I reassure her and she relaxes again, blinking her blue eyes up at me.

I smile at her. "There you go, sweetie. Now stay like that and you'll be fine."

Annabelle continues to blink at me and starts reaching for my hair that curls around my ear.

"Soon you'll have some of your own, but for now, leave it alone, okay?" I ask.

She gurgles and I kiss her forehead. "I love you, Annabelle."

And my mind drifts elsewhere.
