Hello fellow readers! I thought I would write this extra sort of "trivia" here as a thank you for helping my story reach well over 5 K reads (Maybe squeezing in a German lesson or two for those curious).
As stated before, thank you all so much for the reads, votes, and positive feedback! I had no clue where my story would go when I started writing it less than a half a year ago. Especially since I'm a bit late to the fandom in general....heh...whoops.
Spoilers! Don't read on if you haven't read/finished the story.
To get started, a little German. I am not from Germany nor have I ever been there in my life, so if I get something wrong in the translations, I apologize and please feel free to correct me. This knowledge of what I know or wrote either came from three years of taking the language at school or just assistance from a little research. I tried my best throughout the story to keep my facts and German true and as accurate as possible. I left some German words out because since German is closely related to English you could probably give a correct guess to what some of the words mean. Words like Ja, Nein, Wunderbar, etc.
Starting with the first and most used word in the story: Frau.
First I had to read up and see what was a little more polite.
Frau means Mrs. as opposed to Fräulein which means Miss, and whether the main character (you) is married or not is kind of unlikely in the situation of the story. Turns out though that calling someone Miss in Germany (Fräulein) is considered rude and is frowned upon using unless you're using it while talking to someone you really know, but apparently some people are very picky about being called Frau or Fräulein depending on if they really want their "status" to be clarified. I felt this was important cause here in America nobody really cares if you call them Miss or Mrs, but it's polite to call someone you don't know Miss or in some cases, ma'am.
After further research I discovered that Frau can also mean the same as saying "My lady" or "Madam". So without taking the risk I just went with Frau.
Of course Papier is paper and Buch is a book. The mix of English and German that the Medic speaks means that the plurals I used weren't quite accurate, but enough for the reader to understand.
Instead of Papiers it would be Papieren and instead of Buchs it would be Bücher.
Bitte means please as well as you're welcome and when grouped with schön makes Bitte schön, meaning "You're very welcome"
Danke means thank you and when grouped with schön makes "Thank you very much". Much like Bitte does above.
Bitte Nein; one of the most heart wrenching lines that I've heard about, means "Please no".
The book the Medic is reading during "Blank Screens" which is called Chirurgie, means surgery.
Dummkopf literaly translates to Dumb Head, so it could mean anything under the lines of calling someone an idiot or a moron.
Schnell means fast or quickly.
Lastly comes; Es schmerzt. Es tut so weh. It's much like saying "I'm sorry", which would be "Es tut mir leid", translating to "It does me pain".
"Es schmerzt" means "It hurts", and "Es tut so weh". means "It does so much". So putting the two together would make "It hurts. It does so much". Which I then changed it to "It hurts. It hurts so much" to prevent confusion. It means the same thing though.
At last to the Trivia/Fun Facts about writing this story;
.This story started in a little journal that I keep with me at school. I had written all of "Worried" and a little of the first chapter before I liked it and started to write onto Wattpad.
.Originally I was going to have Demoman be the main character's friend instead of Pyro, but I felt that I didn't know enough about Demo to make that kind of approach.
.Since I'm not a fan of "They lived happily ever after" endings I decided early on that either the main character or the Medic would die sometime near the end.
.The story was originally going to start with the main character in her room and talking to Demo after he was concerned about her not coming down for dinner. However after publishing "Worried" I decided I didn't like that idea and tried a new approach.
.The idea of having no respawning was something I struggled with for a while. I didn't want the reader thinking "Oh, they'll come back later." after the death of a character, and I wanted the main character to have a sense of something to work off of after the death of Scout.
.Since I came up with most of these story points on the spot and sometimes took long periods of time before writing each part there are some things I completely forgot about that serve as small mistakes later. For example, I forgot that I could just have the main character take Scout's room after he died, but for some reason the thought never crossed my mind until the story was complete.
.The death of the main character wasn't going to be by bomb, but instead was going to be by back stab after a Spy disguised as the Medic, but I decided not to do much with the Spies.
. I assumed early on that the syringes in the Medic's syringe gun were like tranquil darts, which is what sparked my idea for the first stage of the main character's death.
. Another example of me not thinking things through is when I said "I passed a RED body on the ground." but never clarified who's body it was.
.I don't have a natural hatred for the BLU Sniper, I just thought it would be nice for the main character to have a sort of rival or an achievement that she eventually reaches in the end, which is killing him out of revenge.
. There are multiple references to the comics in my story, ranging from Teufort to the mention of Zhanna. Teufort is a town, not the capture the flag map in this case.
