Chapter 7

"Hola, senor? Si, mi nombre es Madison. Estoy llamando para hablar con...hola? Hello? Dang it! Stupid cell reception." Madison mimicked throwing the phone across the street as she resigned to her frustration. All day she had been calling coaches trying to set up interviews, but unfortunately wherever the training camps were they had hardly any cell service. As a result, her job was taking much longer than anticipated which meant more days, weeks, even months in the D-league.

With a sigh, Madison decided to go back to her hotel and check her emails. Maybe one of the teams contacted her that way.

"Nope. Nothing," Madison mumbled as she saw the empty inbox.

She took a few moments to regroup and figure out a new plan of action. Her thoughts quickly went down a rabbit trail and for the twentieth time that week she clicked on her sent message to make sure email to Sarah really went through. It was odd. So far, Madison was able to stay in touch with the other girls and even Sarah responded to her first message quickly. But, after a few weeks she still hadn't heard anything.

Clicking her tongue and logging off the computer, Madison dismissed the thought. Maybe she was just busy with work. That happens, right?

                                                           ------------

"Hey, E can you check my email too?" Meg asked from the kitchen as Elliott sat in the living room using the computer.

It had been a few weeks since the reunion and even more time since she found out about the baby.  She still hadn't found a way to tell Elliott. The past few days had been crazy as they bought a location for the brewery. It never really seemed like a good time.

"Nothing, babe." Elliott yelled to her.

Meg snapped out of her daze. "Thanks!"

"Are you waiting for something important?" He asked as he walked to the kitchen.

"Well, I haven't heard from Sarah for a while. I don't know, am I just worrying too much?" She asked turning to him.

"I mean, you guys didn't talk for years. Why is this different?" he asked.

"I guess I thought we all reconnected...just hoping we could all be friends again." She shrugged her shoulders and offered a weak smile.

Elliott brought her close to him and embraced her. Meg squeezed her eyes shut as she rested her head on his shoulder. Mainly, she just wished she could tell him the more important news.

                                        ------------

Ana leaned back in her office chair as she stared out the picture window in her office. The sun played against the mirrored skyscraper across the way. The glint of rays hypnotized her.

"Ana! Are you there?" A voice called over the speaker of her phone. Ana broke from her position and faced back towards her desk.

"Yes, I am here. What's up?" She tried to shake the fog from her voice.

"Diego Moreno, your fixer, is on line one...is he calling from Colombia?" Jenna asked.

"More than likely. Thanks." Ana clicked on the blinking light, "Hola, Diego!"

"Hola Ms. Stone!" His voice twitched with excitement.

"How is Medellin today, mi amigo?"

"Bueno. Fabulous. I have a story for you!"

Ana could tell Diego was busting at the seams.  "I am all ears."

"My cousin works in the embassy and the other day he overheard a few of the members talking about how one of their people went missing. I've searched the newspapers and nothing."

Ana quickly grabbed a scrap of paper and began taking notes. "Yeah? What's so great about that? Maybe the person quit."

"No, no, Ms. Stone. The embassy is trying to keep it quite....it was a kidnapping."

"What's the supposed victim's name?"

"Sarah. Sarah Montgomery."

Ana's stomach dropped and she lost her breath. "I am sorry, what?"

"Si, Sarah Montgomery. She worked as the lawyer."

Her mind raced as she tried to process the facts.

"Diego, I am getting on a plane now. Can you pick me up at the airport?"

"Si, senorita."

"See you then." Ana hung up the phone and hopped on the computer and quickly purchased the next flight to Medellin, Colombia.
