(Y/n) tugged her blazer lapels down, smoothing it quickly before stepping into the Stark Tower.

A small smile played on her lips when she thought of the people residing in the building. The Avengers themselves - her old friends - and well, after her retirement from SHIELD as a field agent, she needed something calmer, something she could work on her own time without the hectic schedules at the beck and call of Director Fury.

Her track record was great as an agent, but one awry mission was enough to derail her plans at promotion to Field Supervisor. Now, all she could dream of was a small place, maybe a bakery or library in a nice area, where the only problems were a broken coffee machine or running out of sugar.

So her brother had pulled a few strings, and paired with her experience in handling new agents or reformed bad-guys-turned-good-guys, (Y/n) landed a well-paid job handling none other than the God of Mischief - Loki himself.

She had a tiny grudge against Loki for mind-controlling her brother, so this position made her practically froth at the mouth.

Loki? At her mercy? Sounds perfect.

Of course, she was professional. It's not like she'd treat him like dirt, but she'll give him a hard time before forgiveness is due. Besides, Clint is pretty okay with it now.

Nonetheless, she had plenty of perks, with a free room in the Tower, and good snacks, plus being with her friends? The sales pitch worked like a charm and (Y/n) had accepted.

Pressing the button to the elevator and feeling glad the doors already began sliding open, (Y/n) walked in and pushed the button for the penthouse. She was scheduled to check over a few files, meet him, and familiarize herself with her work, but other than that, it was clear blue skies for her.

"Good morning, Miss Barton," a familiar robotic voice spoke from the walls.

(Y/n) smiled at the little camera perched in the corner of the elevator. "Morning, JARVIS. Are the Avengers here?"

"Surprisingly, they are all present."

That was surprising. It was difficult for all of them to get a day off, but that made it easier for her to greet them.

"Should I get refreshments ready for you?"

"No, thanks, sweetie."

JARVIS made the equivalent of a chuckle, and (Y/n)'s lips twitched into a smile. "You flatter me, Miss Barton."

The last time she had been in the Avengers tower was the day the Chitauri invaded New York.

Clint's first priority during the invasion had been to get (Y/n) to safety, and Tony's Tower had been the safest bet (it really wasn't too safe considering Loki himself had claimed the Tower for himself, but it was Chitauri-free).

So, he made Tony get her.

Turned out, the second Iron Man smashed into her apartment through the already-broken window, he had a shotgun cocked and pointed at his chest.

(Y/n) had been lounging on the table, eating a plate of popcorn as she cussed at her phone (she had been calling Clint non-stop).

Tony's first thought was to grab the popcorn, but one cock of the gun and he was backing away and tripping over the pile of dead pile of Chitauri bodies on her living room rug.

She had stared at him for an uncomfortably long time before she put the gun down and popped in another kernel. "Clint screwed shit up again, didn't he? He always ends up either blowing up a city or summoning aliens. One of these days, he's going to end up in a trashcan with only a bleeding, blind guy to keep him company."
