"Nikko, I've got it," I exclaimed. No matter when or where we went he was always trying to help me with simple tasks. With my seven month mark hitting today, we were just now leaving the doctors office and I felt like i had a basketball attached to the front of my body. "You got to move your seat back," Nikko said pressing the button as if my hands were broken. It annoyed me definitely but then again it surprised me too. I didn't think I'd see Nikko act like this and especially with me. He's been patient and gentle. We even talk more unless the conversation revolves around his family. That's when he shuts down, but I can tell by how his body tenses that it's something going on there.
I've never even met his family to say I'll be having Nikko's first and only child. I wonder if his mom is nice, or if she'd like me? I've met Poochie and Jovani and I know Nikko has his younger sister Mitchy. I've heard them on the phone fussing before. Since my father was Spanish and my mother spoke some Spanish i understood most of the conversation. However I just never learned to speak it well.
"Thanks," I squeak as he closes my door and goes around to the driver side. "Are you sure you want to go to Kinzy's," Nikko asked me for the seventh time since this morning. "Nikko," I sighed. "I was just asking," he cut me off. I'm sure he didn't want to hear the same old 'Kinzy needs me speech'. Before I could say anything else Nikko's phone began ringing. It took one glance at the screen for him to answer. "Yeah," he spoke in a questioning tone. "You got him... Good," Nikko smiled unkindly. It was a sinister grin that left me shivering. "Take him to the warehouse off I-63, and I'll be there in about an hour, " Nikko said, before the other person began speaking again. "Chresanto? How did he get that...Alright, well get the recording and we'll figure it all out later," Nikko said before hanging up.
"Not sticking around," I ask Nikko, who was supposed to stay and chat with Jyrell. "Nah, but I'll pick you up when you call. Hopefully everything will go smooth and Kinzy is feeling better," Nikko said turning down Kinzy's street. "I hope so too," I spoke softly. I really didn't want to see my best friend down in the dumps, or make her feel worse. But I did have to see her. Nikko pulled into the driveway and I inhaled deeply before reaching for the door. "Call me when you'e ready," Nikko repeated sternly. I nodded and took my time getting out of the car and walking to the door. I felt so nervous, and it might be because of all the insecurity Nikko had me feeling, being pregnant and going to see Kinzy, was I stupid to do this? I turned to see Nikko still parked and waiting and sighed. Pressing the doorbell, I pushed all that to the side. Kinzy needed me and just like she was always there for me I was going to be there for her.
I'd just have to see if this was a good or bad idea, once I got in here. It didn't take long for Jyrell to come to the door. "Hey," I smiled, having not seen him since that day at the hospital. Besides phone calls, I hadn't checked on him. He said he was doing better, but from what I saw in front of me, I could tell it was all a lie. I stared sadly at Jyrell's drained face. There were bags under his eyes, and his shoulders were deeply slumped. "Hey short stuff," he teased and hugged me. He pulled back and nodded at Nikko as he pulled out of the drive way. "Come on in," Jyrell said inviting me. I nodded but still no words came out. My eyes went into the living room where the sofa looked slept in. "So how have things been going with Nikko," Jyrell questioned. I cleared my throat trying to do away with the lump in it. I really wanted to ask how Kinzy and him were doing since the house felt cold and broken? And where is Joshua?
