The flight to Minnesota felt like torture

The flight to Minnesota felt like torture. With the wearing effects of alcohol in their systems, Lana and Paige began regretting every decision they made at the bar.

"Okay I just called the uber so it shouldn't take too long" Paige stated as she clicked around on her phone.

Lana was half listening, half taking in the Minnesota air. The brunette wasn't the biggest traveler within the U.S. Her family usually preferred international trips.

As the girls sat in the uber Paige was determined to explain the family tree to Lana. "Okay so we got my grandma Margie who is my mom's mom and my grandpa Carl who is her dad."

By the end of Paige's spiel, Lana remembered a total of five names.

"Oh yay we are here" Paige said out of breath from her family tree lesson.

Lana took notice of the home. It was the perfect size, not too small where everyone would be crammed but not too big where the rooms would feel like a museum.

As they stepped out of the car, Lana's boots crunched in the snow. She took notice of the Christmas lights surrounding the bushes and trim of the roof.

"Wait," Lana said, pausing on the front step. "Do I look like I'm trying too hard?"

"Yes," Paige said. Then, "But it's cute. Come on."

The warmth hit Lana immediately, cinnamon, pine, and something vaguely alcoholic. The entryway was decorated within an inch of its life: garlands on the bannister, a red velvet runner down the hall, mismatched stockings hung over doorways.

"Miss Superstar finally decided to visit her old remnants, huh?" Lana heard before she saw Paige being engulfed in a hug by who she assumed was her mom.

"Oh my gosh and you must be Lana" Amy said now looking at the brunette, "you are stunning."

"Thank you, and thank you so much for having me." Lana said with gratitude.

"It was no problem at all. The more the merrier" She said sweetly.

Just as Amy was finishing her welcome, a deep voice called from the hallway, "Well, well, if it isn't the mystery guest finally gracing us with her presence."

Bob appeared, a mischievous grin spreading across his face as he leaned casually against the doorframe. "Lana, right? I'm Bob, Paige's dad."

Before Lana could respond, two more figures walked in, the step-parents, one carrying a tray of cookies and the other balancing a stack of holiday cups.

One stepped forward, smiling warmly. "Welcome, Lana. We've heard lots about you. It's great that you came during the holidays, I have to warn you,
it's always a bit hectic though.

The other added with a laugh, "And if you need a break, just find us, we're usually hiding near the snacks."

Lana grinned, already liking this family.
