Ang Kapitan at ang Nerd: Ang Serye

Kabanata 46:  A Challenge and a Promise

Kenji held up the blue teddy bear, a grin spreading across his face. "See, I told you I'd win it for you, babe," he said,  his eyes twinkling with pride.

But his smile vanished the moment he saw the familiar group of faces standing behind Mark.  It was the basketball team from the University of Colorado Springs,  Devon, Nick,  Calvin,  and Frost,  the very same group they'd encountered earlier.  A cold feeling settled in Kenji’s stomach.  His initial thrill of winning  was replaced by a sudden surge of apprehension.

Devon stepped forward, a smirk playing on his lips.  "Look, the son of Bradford International Academy, Kenji Alejandro Bradford.  You know,  you guys are the favorites to win this tournament." He paused,  his eyes fixed on Kenji. "But we're coming for you."

“Ano nanaman kailangan ninyo?” Kenji asked, his voice cool, but his eyes flashing with anger.

Frost, the tallest and most intimidating member of the group,  stepped forward. "Nothing, just wanted to say good luck at the sportsfest tomorrow."  He paused,  his eyes meeting Mark’s.  “If you guys lose,  I’m gonna date Mark.”  He winked at Mark, a smug grin on his face.

Kenji's fist clenched. He was about to lunge at Frost, ready to unleash his anger, but Mark's hand on his arm stopped him.  "Babe,  tama na," Mark said,  his voice quiet but firm.  “Let’s just go.”

Kenji’s eyes darted back and forth between Frost and Mark.  He was fuming,  his heart pounding with anger,  but he knew that Mark was right.  There was no point in escalating the situation.

He nodded,  taking a deep breath.  “Fine,” he said,  his voice laced with a hint of frustration.  “See you on the court tomorrow.”

Mark pulled Kenji away,  his hand still holding onto Kenji’s arm.  The encounter had left a strange feeling in his heart,  a mixture of anger,  anxiety,  and a strange sense of protectiveness for Kenji.  He knew that Frost was trying to provoke them,  but he couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease.

As they walked away,  Kenji squeezed Mark’s hand.  “Don’t worry about him,” he said,  his voice softer now,  filled with a hint of reassurance.  “We’ll win tomorrow,  and I’ll make sure he doesn’t even get close to you.”

Mark smiled,  his heart warming at Kenji’s words.  He knew that Kenji was protective of him,  even if their “relationship” was a bit of a charade.  He leaned into Kenji,  feeling a sense of comfort and security.  He knew that with Kenji by his side,  he could face anything,  even if it meant facing down a rival basketball team.
