Elowen stood there for a moment, her entire body cold and covered in sticky milkshake. The shock of the moment sank in deeper, making her feel like the walls were closing in around her. But then, something inside her snapped. She couldn't let them walk away like this, as if it was all her fault. She couldn't keep bottling up her feelings and her truth, not after everything.
She slammed her hands down on the table, glancing at the door where James and Alyssa were making their way outside, a sickening sense of unfairness rushing through her. Without thinking, Elowen stormed after them, her footsteps quick and angry as she pushed through the restaurant door.
"Hey!" she yelled, her voice breaking the calm of the parking lot.
Both James and Alyssa turned to face her, and Elowen's heart raced as the fury built up in her chest. She wasn't going to let them make this her fault—this had always been about more than just her.
"Don't you dare walk away from me!" Elowen shouted, her voice thick with emotion. "You want to know why I've been talking about you behind your backs? Well, here it is!"
James shot her a look of disbelief. "Are you seriously going to—?"
"I'm serious, James! You want to know what really happened? Fine!" she snapped, fury making her words sharper. "It's because both of you make everything impossible! You lie about everything! You say you're trying to fix things, but I never know where I stand with you two. Every time I start to trust you, you do some crap like tonight! You don't communicate, and you just expect me to deal with it while you act like I'm the one in the wrong!"
Alyssa scoffed, rolling her eyes, but Elowen didn't care anymore. She felt her voice shaking with anger but kept going.
"God, you both just take and take and take! What was I supposed to do, Alyssa? Pretend like everything's perfect when you're dragging us into all of this mess? And you, James—don't act like you're the one here trying to be all calm and collected when you constantly push everyone away, like we're all supposed to deal with your dad's expectations and pretend we don't know you're barely holding it together!"
She took a step forward, her eyes burning with raw honesty now. "I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with me, because every time I feel like I'm okay, you guys turn it around and make me question everything. I thought I needed to bottle it all up, but now? I'm done. I'm just... done trying to play this game."
Her words hung in the air, harsh but freeing. For a moment, all she heard was the sound of her breath, heavy and shaky in the silence that followed. She looked at both of them, her heart still hammering.
"You both are so caught up in your own drama," Elowen added, her words much quieter now. "I'm just... tired. Tired of pretending I'm okay when we're all falling apart. I wish you'd both just talk to me... really talk... instead of this... this game. But if that's too much for you two to handle, then fine. I won't be part of it anymore."
The last sentence hung between them like a challenge. Elowen stood there, hoping beyond hope that they would hear the truth in her words, feel the weight of it all. But as the silence lingered, both James and Alyssa remained still, their faces unreadable.
Alyssa finally sneered, crossing her arms. "So, what—you're just done with us now?"
Elowen shook her head, her eyes blazing with frustration. "I'm not done with you," she said, voice calm but firm. "But I am done letting you keep me hanging in this mess. If we're going to be friends again, it's because we talk about this, not keep lying and hiding behind drama."
Her statement hung in the cold night air, neither James nor Alyssa moving as they processed her words. Elowen couldn't control what happened next, but she had finally said everything that needed to be said. She had given it her all. It was on them now.
