Animal shelter:

The adoption center was bustling with activity, and the memories came flooding back for Summer and Jason as they parked and walked inside with the kids. It had been years since their first visit to this very place—the day Luna, at just five years old, worked her undeniable charm on Jason and convinced him to get their first family dog, Bella. Summer still remembered the surprise (and mild exasperation) she felt when her then-husband and kids walked in with Bella in tow.

Ethan, who had been a toddler back then, was now a mature 7-year-old, holding onto Jason's hand with an air of curiosity and anticipation. Luna, freshly nine and more determined than ever, led the charge. She already had her heart set on convincing her parents to adopt yet another dog, despite their current zoo-like household of two dogs, Bella's puppies, and three energetic kids.

Summer trailed behind with Eliza in her stroller, shaking her head slightly at Luna's persistence. "Jason, are we really doing this again?" Summer asked with a raised eyebrow, her tone equal parts amused and exasperated.

Jason shrugged, trying to look innocent. "We're just looking. You know how much Luna loves the idea. Besides, it'll be fun for the kids."

"Fun for the kids or fun for Luna?" Summer teased, her voice light but her eyes giving Jason a knowing glance.

Luna had already darted to one of the enclosures, where a group of puppies tumbled around, their fluffy tails wagging like tiny windmills. She knelt down and began cooing at them, her excitement contagious. Ethan stood a little back, eyeing the puppies with interest but not quite ready to dive in like his sister.

"This one!" Luna exclaimed, pointing to a small golden retriever mix with bright, curious eyes. "Mommy, Daddy, look! He's perfect!"

Jason chuckled and exchanged a glance with Summer. "Here we go again," he murmured under his breath.

"Luna, we've already got our hands full at home," Summer started, keeping her voice calm but firm. "We've got Bella, Aurora, the puppies, and three of you. Are you sure you're ready for another dog?"

Luna turned those wide, pleading eyes on her mom, the same ones that had convinced Jason all those years ago. "But Mommy, I promise I'll take care of him! Please, please, please! He's so cute, and he looks like he needs us!"

Summer sighed, knowing she was outnumbered. Jason wasn't going to put up much resistance, and Ethan was now chiming in with a quiet, "Yeah, he's really cool, Mom."

"Eliza would probably love him too," Jason added unhelpfully, grinning as he glanced down at their 6-month-old, who was babbling happily in her stroller, oblivious to the ongoing negotiation.

Realizing she was fighting a losing battle, Summer crossed her arms and gave Jason her best glare. "Fine. But this is your project, Luna. You're going to help with the training, feeding, and everything else that comes with having another dog."

Luna's face lit up like it was Christmas morning. "I promise, Mommy! I'll be the best puppy mom ever!"

Summer threw her hands up in defeat. "Alright, let's do it. But remember, when we get home, we are having a *very* long talk about boundaries and responsibilities."

Jason laughed and gave Summer a quick kiss on the cheek. "You're the best. You know that, right?"

As they filled out the adoption paperwork, Summer watched Luna bonding with her new furry companion, a bittersweet smile forming on her lips. She might not have planned for this, but seeing her daughter so happy made it worth the chaos.

By the time they got home, Summer could already hear herself recounting this story years from now—another chapter in their family's wonderfully unpredictable life.
