A frantic knock shook Luis awake.

Groggy, he groped for the light switch. The room flickered to life, and the pounding got louder.

"I'm coming!" he called, swinging his legs off the bed and heading for the door.

He opened it to find his sister Linda and her husband Sergio standing there—faces tight, breaths ragged. In their arms, the twins—Risa and Ramos.

Luis's gut twisted. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

Linda's eyes were wet. She didn't answer. Instead, she shoved a thick folder into his hands.

"Take them. Keep them safe. As long as you can," she whispered.

"What happened?" he asked, but she looked away.

Sergio urged her forward with a hand on her back.

Linda pressed soft kisses to the babies' heads, gripped Luis's arm hard, and said, "Don't trust anyone."

Her words hit him like a punch.

Before he could ask more, they were gone—into the night.

Luis stood frozen, the weight of the twins heavier than ever.

Somewhere deep down, he knew—he'd never see them again.
