Y/n's POV
We marched in the dead of night, no horses to help pull along the giant log we'd use as a ram, all in a distraction attempt to barge down the gates of Dunholm.
Crickets could be heard all around us as each man kept quiet, the only noise being from the cart which carried the log.
A split on the path approached when Ragnar raised his hand demanding everyone hold.
"Shh. This is where we part." Ragnar says addressing the men and turning to his brother.
"We will show ourselves only when we know the east door has been opened. We will attack. Then it is up to you to save us. We will be theirs to slaughter." Ragnar confirms with his brother asserting the notion of the risk he and the men in his group would be taking.
I gulped. "No pressure then." I meekly spoke.
"Lord. May the gods be with you." Clapa, another man I had met who'd stayed in Eoferwic beside Sihtric and sworn to Uhtred, bestowed upon Ragnar.
"Er, God. May God be with him, us." Beocca once again interjected dismissing the notion of multiple gods and forcing the belief of one god.
"You just watch over Ragnar. Hmm?" Uhtred laughs at Beocca And his attempt at a superior faith.
"Good luck, little brother." Ragnar said when Uhtred tapped his arm. Having caught his younger brothers hand the two press their foreheads together sharing a moment before they were separated for the battle.
"See you all in Dunholm." Uhtred stepped back running up the side of a steep forest path hill. Behind him myself and the others under Uhtred's command followed while Ragnar and Brida led their group in another direction.
"We move quickly, we must be in place before dawn." Uhtred having noticed us falling slightly behind ushers us.
"This path is fit for goats only." Sihtric grumbles.
"Be quiet and watch where you're placing your feet." Beocca barked in the midst of doing so he misplaced his own step falling and almost taking Finan and I out with him.
Together we hurled the man back onto his feet. "Bless you." He threw over his shoulder rushing to catch up.
In jest I pretended to wipe that blessing on Finan, who may not seem it but believed in god, yes one god. Catching my jest he pushed me forward eliciting a small laugh from myself as I ran to catch up with the others.
By the time the crescent moon became a half moon, reaching its peak in the sky, the small group led by Uhtred, came crouching behind some foliage, peering out at the guarded wall near the water supply door.
Closely watching the guards who sat at a table not really keeping watch, when an opportune moment presented itself Uhtred and Hild bolted forwards. Running across a small open plain before pressing up against the wall of the fortress out of sight of the guards.
The next opportunity led Father Beocca and Sihtric following in tow, only Sihtric found himself distracted by the priest's slow pace causing him to fall with a grunt.
I sucked in a hard breath my hand unconsciously reaching out for the one next to mine as I held it in anticipation. When Sihtric got up and made it to the wall I released my breath head drooping. My eyes caught glimpse at the hand I held and slowly trailing up its arm and to the man looking at me with a smirk.
Thankful for the darkness to hide my flush I ripped my hand away shoving his shoulder in an attempt to wipe that smirk off his face as we watched Aethelwold and Steapa run across the plain.
