It had been a week since the shocking news that her status had suddenly shifted from single to married—all because of her own stupidity. The weight of that night still lingered in her mind. She had drunk too much, let her guard down, and now, she was married. She couldn't stop blaming the alcohol for what had happened in Las Vegas.
She tried to bury what happened there. Tried to pretend that the mess she'd gotten herself into could stay hidden, like some dark secret in the neon-lit city of sin. But how could she? Every time she tried to push it away, she found herself back in the same place—married to Freen, the powerful, cold, and distant woman who seemed so far out of her league.
Becky went back to work, trying to pretend everything was normal. But it wasn't. Not anymore. Every time she had to face Freen for work, her heart raced uncontrollably. She feared that one of these days, the pounding in her chest would be too much to handle. She was sure she'd collapse from it, and it would all be because of her—because of this ridiculous, impossible marriage that she didn't ask for.
Freen, on the other hand, was... quiet. Too quiet. She buried herself in work, and not once did she address their marriage. She hadn't said a word about it, as if it was some inconvenient mistake that could be swept under the rug. But Freen knew better. Eventually, she'd have to talk to Becky. Eventually, the silence would have to end.
But Freen couldn't believe it herself—married to her own secretary?
To someone she never saw as anything more than an annoying, out-of-place, nerdy girl who wore thick glasses and always had her nose in a book. Becky wasn't her type, not by a long shot. Everything about her, from her awkwardness to her awkward fashion sense, grated on Freen's nerves. How could this have happened? How was she now bound to this girl by a piece of paper, when everything about their interaction had been nothing but tension?
She couldn't stop herself from thinking: What now? What was she supposed to do with this mess?
The thought of telling her family about the accident was too much. But it was done. She had already told them about the "accidental marriage," and as expected, it had caused a stir. Her father yelled, her mother slapped her, and her sister had laughed—teasing her relentlessly, as if the situation was some kind of joke. But it wasn't. It wasn't funny at all. This wasn't some whimsical mistake to be laughed off; this was her life. This was the reality she now had to navigate.
In the middle of all these swirling emotions, Freen's phone rang.
She looked down, seeing her mother's name flashing on the screen.
"Yes, Mom?" she answered, trying to hide the tension in her voice.
"Come to dinner tonight. And bring your wife. We want to meet her," her mother said, before Freen could say a word, hanging up abruptly.
Freen let out a deep, frustrated sigh. She ran a hand through her hair, trying to calm herself. How was she supposed to face her family, knowing this whole thing was a complete disaster?
She glanced over at Becky, who was sitting at her desk, staring off into space. Was she thinking about their marriage too? Or was she simply lost in her own thoughts, trying to pretend everything was fine? Freen didn't know. She didn't know what Becky was thinking. She didn't even know what she herself was thinking most of the time anymore.
Freen walked over and stood in front of Becky's desk.
"Come with me tonight. Mom and Dad want to see us for dinner," she said flatly, her voice betraying a hint of the frustration she felt.
She turned and left, leaving Becky blinking in confusion, as though the world had just shifted beneath her feet.
Becky swallowed hard, processing what her boss—or more accurately, her wife—had just said. Dinner with her parents? What did that even mean? How could she face them? How could she face anyone knowing that she was now, in some strange twist of fate, married to the woman who had been her boss?
