Chapter 9: Tension and Decisions
Farhan stretched on the bed in Amal's room, his face relaxed as he watched her move around, tidying up. His eyes twinkled mischievously as he teased, "Keh Amal, ya naga wai daga auren mu zuwa sati biyu, kin kara kiba haka? (Amal, how come from the day we got married to now, you've gained some weight in just two weeks?)"
Amal laughed softly, rolling her eyes. "Uhmm," she replied playfully, ignoring his teasing.
Farhan continued, chuckling, "Maybe it's all the food you've been making. You know, I should watch out for my figure too!"
Amal smiled, but before she could respond, Farhan's phone rang. It was his mother. "Hello, Inna," he greeted, his voice softening.
"Baban ka yana neman ka yanzu-yanzu, zo gida! (Your father is looking for you immediately, come home now!)" her voice was firm.
Farhan's face tensed as he hung up. "Inna ce. Baban na nemana yanzu." (It's my mom. Dad is calling for me now.) He sighed, already sensing the tension building up.
*****
Meanwhile, at Fathiya's house, she sat silently, lost in thought. Her sister Anam was beside her, trying to comfort her but clearly frustrated with the situation.
"Hmm, namiji ba dan goyo ba. (Men are not babies to be cared for)," Anam muttered bitterly. "Wai har keh zai yi wa wannan rashin mutuncin? (How could he disrespect you like this?)" Her voice was sharp, her heart unsettled.
Fathiya remained silent, staring ahead, the weight of her marriage pressing down on her chest. She felt torn between her emotions and the expectations of everyone around her.
Anam continued, unable to hide her anger. "Namiji hankaka! (Men are tricky!)" She sighed deeply. "Gaskiya, I don't understand how he could just marry someone else so casually. No respect at all!"
Just then, Hisham, her older brother, walked in. His face was stern, but his tone was calm as he said, "Ba duka maza bane kamar Farhan. Wallahi, ni bazan taba irin abun da yayi ba. (Not all men are like Farhan. I swear, I would never do what he did.)"
The discussion went on, everyone sharing their thoughts on the situation. But Fathiya remained quiet, her mind far away, replaying every moment of her life with Farhan. She didn't know what her next move would be, but the pain was becoming unbearable.
***
Farhan arrived home to find his father, Alhaji Lawal, sitting sternly in the living room. His mother, Hajiya Jummai, his brother, and sister were also present. The atmosphere was tense.
His father didn't waste any time.
"Farhan, kai baka da hankali walahi! (Farhan, you have no sense, I swear!)" His voice was loud, filled with disappointment.
"Ka hana kowa fada wa yarinya cewa zakayi aure, kace kai zaka fada mata. (You stopped everyone from telling your wife you were remarrying, claiming you'd inform her yourself.)"
Alhaji Lawal's voice grew angrier as he continued, "We trusted you, muka yarda mukayi shiru, amma baka da daraja! (We trusted you, kept quiet, but you have no respect!) How could you disrespect your wife by marrying another without her knowing?"
Farhan's head hung low in shame, unable to respond. His father thundered again,
"Now, me, Alhaji Lawal you've caused me, Alhaji Lawal, a respected man, to face such humiliation in my own home!
The room was heavy with silence as his father's words echoed. "Ni nasan wanan ba tarbiyan da na baka bace. (I know this is not the upbringing I gave you.)"
Farhan's mother, Hajiya Jummai, interjected, trying to ease the tension. "Yanzu dai, tunda abun da ya riga ya faru, ya faru. (Now that what has happened has happened), what do we do next?" She looked at her husband, seeking a way forward. "We need to take action; we can't just sit and do nothing."
Alhaji Lawal turned to Farhan, his eyes narrowing. "Kana san ta har yanzu? (Do you still want her?)"
Farhan raised his head slightly, his voice barely audible. "Eh, Wallahi Abba, ina san matata. (Yes, I swear, Father, I still want my wife.)"
His father sighed heavily, rubbing his temples.
"Yanzu ni zaka sa in kira wani in bada hakuri saboda abun da Dana yayi? (Now you want me to call and apologize on behalf of my son?)" He paused, shaking his head. "Toh, dole na kira, amma idan ka bari akayi mun wani rashin mutunci, Wallahi sai ranka ya baci. (I'll call, but if you let this disrespect happen again, I swear, you'll regret it!)"
With that, Alhaji Lawal dialed Fathiya's father, Alhaji Nadeem. The phone rang once before being answered.
"Salamu alaikum," Farhan's father greeted.
"Wa'alaikumussalam wa rahmatullah," Alhaji Nadeem replied.
Without hesitation, Alhaji Lawal began, "Hajiya ta fada mun abunda ya faru, dan Allah, kuyi hakuri. Kuyi hakuri a maido mana da er mu. (My wife told me what happened, please, I beg you, forgive us and return our daughter.) Farhan is with me, and he regrets his actions deeply."
Alhaji Nadeem's response was sharp. "Alhaji Lawal, Wallahi ni ban rike ka a rai ba. (I don't hold any grudge against you), but diya ta ta gama auren daka, your son's actions have ended his marriage to my daughter." His voice was firm, unwavering. "He has disrespected her beyond repair, and I've taught my daughter to value her self-respect above anything else.",saboda haka when it comes to supporting her I will definetly do that
Farhan's heart sank as he listened, his body trembling.
Alhaji Nadeem continued, "I am not forcing her, but I know my daughter well, and I am sure she will not disappoint me. And I've already started thinking about someone else for her, someone who can treat her the way she deserves."
The shock was visible on Farhan's face, his palms and forehead sweating. He felt as though the ground beneath him had disappeared.
"Saboda haka kace ya tanadi takardan saki," (So tell him to prepare the divorce papers), Alhaji Nadeem added coldly. "If he refuses, she will take him to court.
He can go and focus on his new wife, I'm sure they're still enjoying their honeymoon."
Alhaji Lawal sighed deeply, knowing there was no way to change Nadeem's mind.because Nadeem was a man once he makes a decision no one can dare change it
"To Allah ya kyauta," he said softly. "Mu kwana lafiya." He hung up the phone, the weight of the conversation heavy on his shoulders.
Farhan sat in silence, his face pale and drenched with sweat. His father turned to him, his voice low and disappointed. "Yanzu ka ji mai yace ay . Rashin hankalinka ya jawo ka rasa mata mai hankali, mai tarbiya. (Now you see what your carelessness has caused. You've lost a good and decent wife.)"
Farhan remained quiet, unable to find the words to respond. His mother, Hajiya Jummai, shook her head sadly, muttering, "To Allah ya sawake." (May God make things right.)
The room remained still, the gravity of the situation sinking in as Farhan realized the full weight of what he had lost.
