Maskwa caught him before he reached the ground and Raz quickly shifted back and dressed then after a few moments Sam regained consciousness and tried to wrestle out of Maskwa's hold but he wouldn't release him.
"we all need to talk, let's go back to the camp fire, I'll tell the guy who's watching the fire to get some sleep so we can have privacy" Maskwa said.
The four young men walked back to the camp and went to sit by the fire then Maskwa had a few words with the man before he walked away and into one of the tents.
This was the very last thing he needed while everything else was going on but the situation had escalated and deep down he wanted Sam to know the truth.
"I don't know where to begin?" Maskwa said.
"we may as well start from where I died" Pon said.
"but why do you keep saying you died? you're right here in front of us?" Sam said.
"it's a long story Sam but the most important thing to all of this is you must never tell anyone, that and the fact that Maskwa didn't lie to you" Raz said.
"it all began when Pon and I were kids and I got sent to his school ..." Raz began,
Sam and Maskwa both listened intently to the story because even Maskwa didn't know most of it and at some point when Sam shivered because of the cold he got up and put more wood onto the fire before sitting back down beside him and wrapping his arm around his shoulders and this time Sam didn't push him away.
When Raz had finished telling the story, Sam stared into the flames thinking about everything he had been told. His head told him they were lying but he had seen Raz turn into a giant wolf with his own eyes and looking at their faces he could see they were telling the truth.
"is this all for real you guys?" Sam asked.
"I suppose now would be a good time to tell you about the lupine flower" Maskwa said then told the group about his trip to Pipon's cabin and the visit.
"he told me to say hi to Timi and he told me to take care of you Sam, he said he likes you" Maskwa smiled.
"and who is Timi again?" Sam asked.
"that's Pipon's wolf, well, my wolf now" Pon said.
"are there others ... like you guys?" Sam asked Raz
"I'd rather not say Sam" Raz replied.
"so ... are we good now?" Maskwa asked Sam
"I guess but don't ever keep secrets from me again" Sam said just as Maskwa's mother came out of the tepee and walked across to the camp fire.
"mother, what are you doing up, you should be asleep" Maskwa said.
"you know what I'm like dear, I do some of my best thinking at night and I couldn't help but overhear your voices" she said as Raz looked across at the tent.
"don't worry dear, no one else heard" she said smiling before walking across to Pon and sitting beside him.
"so, your name is Timi?" she said.
"mother" Maskwa didn't know where his mother was going with this.
"I missed seeing you every morning" she said as Pon let out a small whine and Maskwa's mother stroked his hair.
"I knew you loved Maskwa, you and Pipon"
"why didn't you ever say anything mother" Maskwa said.
"it wasn't for me to interfere, I felt like banging your heads together, that's for sure" she replied.
