"what do you want to drink?" Maskwa asked the man after he'd sat down on the stool beside him at the bar.

"I already had one shot but I can't get too drunk so ..."

"how about a pepsi?" Maskwa suggested.

"sure, why not?"

"do you normally dress like that?"

"I'll have you know that I'm considered one of the best dressed models in Thailand" Sam replied indignantly.

"or undressed depending on how you look at it" Maskwa said.

"no disrespect but what the hell has it got to do with you anyway?" Sam said.

"it's got nothing to do with me but if you were mine you damn well wouldn't be going out dressed like that"

"it's a good job that I'm not yours then isn't it, I don't think I'll have that pepsi after all" Sam said standing up to go back to his friends who were chatting with some locals.

Maskwa caught the guys wrist before he could walk away,

"let go" Sam said.

"just sit down and stop over reacting" Maskwa replied.

"over reacting, you called me a whore over there but I still came with you thinking that maybe it was an aberration" Sam said.

"I didn't call you a whore, I implied that you were dressed like one, what's wrong with that? "

"and that right there is why I'm leaving" Sam continued.

"listen, I'm sorry ok" Maskwa said trying to smooth things over, everyone knew he wasn't good at communicating.

"you're not sorry at all and anyway, it's not like I'm a girl, what if we were on the beach and I took my shirt off, what would you say then?" Sam asked.

"that's different, it's a beach" Maskwa replied.

Sam threw his hands up in the air in defeat while rolling his eyes,

"thank you for the ... offer of a drink, have a nice life and ..."

"so you're just going to go over there and let some other guy buy you a drink I suppose?"

"again, what's it got to do with you?" Sam said and there was an uncomfortable pause before Maskwa spoke,

"you're right, you have a great night then" Maskwa said letting go of the guys wrist and turning back to the bar.

What was he even thinking, he didn't come here to get entangled with outsiders, he just wanted to get drunk to forget.

Sam walked across to his friends and a local pulled out a seat for him then sitting down he introduced himself before asking,

"what's his deal?"

"who? the guy at the bar ... that's Maskwa" one of the locals said.

"he comes in here almost every night, sometimes in the afternoon and just sit's quietly and drinks until he can't drink anymore"

"why does he do that?" Sam asked.

"it was after one of our tribesmen went missing, they searched for him for a few weeks then decided that he must be dead but his body was never found, Maskwa blames himself because he used to harass the guy when they were kids, he think's he's the one who caused him to move up the mountain"

"why did he harass the guy?" Sam asked, he knew he was being intrusive but he was curious.

"seems he had a crush on him but didn't know how to tell him so he said the first things that came to his mind which were usually disparaging remarks"
