Maskwa opened the door and walked inside to find Sam packing his bag.
"what are you doing baby?"
"I think it's best if I go to the house with the guys, you all have important family stuff going on and I'm just getting in the way here" Sam said.
"no, my mother said that you could stay as long as you want, you have to stay here baby, I need you" Maskwa said.
"then ... if your sure" Sam replied.
"I am" Maskwa assured him.
"may I ask ... why does your grandmother live so far away from you guys?"
"it got too much for her here up in the mountains, it's ok in the house and all but the terrain outside isn't really old people friendly so my parents found a nice little house for her down the mountain, she likes it there, it's flatter for her and she has a lot of friends" Maskwa said.
"that's nice" Sam smiled.
"in saying that, if she ever becomes housebound she may as well come back up here, it would be nice to have her back home"
"so what now?"
"I'll go and wash up then I'm going down to help mom with dinner" Maskwa said.
"I'll go down and offer too" Sam said.
"ok babe, see you soon" Maskwa said leaning in for a quick kiss before walking into his bathroom.
Sam looked at the half closed bathroom door and listened to the sounds of the shower running, that was his cue to leave the room. He'd told Maskwa that he was going down to help his mother but in truth he wanted to escape to his room to think.
Even though Maskwa had asked him to stay he couldn't help feeling as if he was in the way, not only that, why was he prolonging the inevitable?
Two days, three days, another week, in the end he'd still have to go back home to Thailand and it was obvious to hear Maskwa talking about his family that his future was here and Sam wouldn't have it any other way.
Why the hell had he agreed to come to this god forsaken beautiful village and meet these wonderful people and why was it going to hurt so much going back home to somewhere he was supposed to love.
Taking a deep breath he crept out of Maskwa's bedroom and went downstairs to find his mother in the kitchen chopping vegetables.
"what can I do to help Mrs Maskawisiw?" he asked.
"if you really want to help, please take care of Maskwa until we come home, I won't worry if I know you're with him" she said.
" then ... I'll do that Mrs Maskawisiw"
"and please, feel free to call me mother" she smiled and patted Sam's back.
"very well mother" Sam smiled back.
"what about your family dear, is it ok to ask?"
"of course it's ok ... my parents kicked me out when I was a teenager, I haven't seen them in about mmm eleven years now I think" Sam replied.
"oh dear, may I ask?"
"it's because I'm not attracted to girls Mrs M ... mother, if you want me to leave it's ok, I'll understand" Sam replied.
Maskwa's mother put down the knife she was using to chop the vegetables and walked up to Sam pulling him into her arms and crushing him against her bosom in a maternal gesture.
"my dear boy don't let me hear you say something like that ever again" she said as she patted his back.
Sam couldn't help sobbing, it had been so many years since he'd felt a mothers arms about him and the tears wouldn't stop as Maskwa's mother whispered words of comfort to her future son in law.
"there there dear, I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you"
"you didn't upset me mother, I'm so happy" Sam said as Maskwa walked into the kitchen.
He quickly assessed the situation and noted Sam's tear stained cheeks before attempting to lighten the mood.
"what's going on in here? I should tell you mom, Sam has a thing for long hair" Maskwa teased.
"who has a thing for long hair?" Maskwa's father said as he came in from the yard, he had overheard his wife's conversation with Sam and he had been loitering outside until it was safe to come back in.
"he's just teasing you guys" Sam said before laughing.
"you boys go and watch tv or something, your father and I will make dinner, you guys can do it next time" Maskwa's mother said.
"ok" Maskwa replied grabbing Sam's wrist and gently pulling him through to the lounge.
"so what kind of things do you like to watch?" Maskwa asked Sam.
"I don't really have time to watch tv to be honest"
"but when you do, what do you watch?
"I like to watch BLs ..."
"what's that?"
"turn on the tv, I'll show you" Sam said as he pulled out his phone and logged into one of his favourite streaming apps then chose a show to cast to Maskwa's tv, one that he thought Maskwa might enjoy.
The pair settled back to watch as a mafia guy was being chased through the streets of Thailand before being cornered in a back street where he offered a guy money to help him. There was a huge fight scene before both guys managed to escape on a motorbike.
"so you're telling me these two start dating?" Maskwa said.
"mmm it's a great show"
"but if you don't like action there's another one you might like about a guy who goes to the countryside to teach and falls in love with the local Chief"
"so basically you like watching romance" Maskwa smiled.
"well ... I guess" Sam replied.
"I'm sorry by the way"
"about?"
"about your parents, I couldn't help overhearing" Maskwa said.
"it is what it is ..." Sam shrugged then they settled back to watch the rest of the episode that Sam had put on.
"what do you think?" Sam asked him when the credits were rolling.
"it's certainly action packed, how many episodes are there?"
"14"
"great, so we'll watch an episode together every night, deal?" Maskwa said.
"deal" Sam replied then realised he'd just committed to staying for another two weeks.
