"well alright then" Sam said.
"so are you going to introduce me to your friend?" Maskwa said.
"sure, let's go back down before your mom starts to wonder what we're doing up here?"
The pair made their way back down to the kitchen where Sam introduced Maskwa to Paitoon.
"so you're a model as well?" Maskwa asked him.
"I know you wouldn't think so to see me like this" toonie said referring to his dull, serviceable clothing, his face that was devoid of make up and his hair that was all over the place after wearing a beanie.
"you look fine" Sam assured him.
"this is what happens when you're engaged to an ex military guy, I think he forgets sometimes that we don't 'have' to wear military greens now, either that or he gets a massive discount in the army surplus store" toonie laughed.
"but you rock it so well baby boy" Sam smiled.
Maskwa laughed at their exchange and couldn't help imagining Sam wearing caribou hide with moccasins on his pretty little feet like in the old days.
He would come home from hunting and Sam would be waiting for him on the porch while he saw to the horses and washed up outside then he would carry him up to their room and say hello properly.
Sam noticed Maskwa's expression and could almost see the cogs turning,
"what are you thinking?" he asked.
"I'll tell you one day" Maskwa replied.
"so how about you both show me around the village?" Paitoon said looking at the pair of them.
"sure, let me just grab my coat" Sam said leaving toonie and Maskwa alone.
"Sam was right, you're a natural" Paitoon said.
"I'm not following?" Maskwa replied.
"when he was telling me that he'd found someone to stand in as a model, he said that you were a natural and I'm saying he's right" toonie added.
"is that a good thing?" Maskwa asked him.
"that all depends, do you see yourself becoming a model full time? it's definitely an option for you" Paitoon said.
"I never really gave it a thought ... it's not something high on my list of priorities" Maskwa confessed.
"still, you should give it some thought, there's good money in it and if invested wisely you'd be set for life"
"my people aren't really concerned with material things, as long as we have good health, good neighbours, food on the table and a roof over our heads"
"well, I just thought I'd mention"
"I appreciate it, thanks" Maskwa replied.
Sam came back into the kitchen with his coat and boots and the three of them bundled up to take a walk around the village.
Maskwa introduced both Paitoon and Sam to some of the locals and it was a fun afternoon then they went back to Maskwa's house for coffee and sandwiches and Paitoon settled back to regale everyone with amusing tales of his and Sam's modelling adventures and his stories had everyone laughing.
Maskwa's parents noticed how happy Maskwa was today and that in turn made them happy too.
About an hour later they all heard the helicopter flying over and ten minutes after that there was a knock on the door.
Their house was soon bursting at the seams when Chit entered to collect Paitoon and he was followed by Kiri and Kan and after all the introductions were made, Maskwa's mother made another pot of coffee.
