Gods and Fate Part 2

Start from the beginning

"Fucking hell..."

"Make way!"

"Pardon me–!"

"Ah, I'm so sorry!"

They whisked away the paintings, suits of armor and ornamental weapons. One maid ran with a large bowl of golden goblets while another carried a sack of clanking things. In a war, all it took was a single spark. And all the richness it houses become ashes.

But before that, it's already looking like a bunch of opportunists, or 'protesters' according to the new Russian and Chinese disinformation campaign, in the wake of the next dead American.

"Where's Chitose?"

"If she's still alive, she'll be leading a sniper team composed of the recon team stationed in the city."

"You left her?"

"The city's been covered in some fog that jams our signals. That's why I joined the runners and tried to contact anyone outside until a Mongol scored a lucky shot on my back."

"I'm sorry."

"Stop. I don't want to hear."

Kazuya grabbed her arm. "Ibuki–"

"I said stop!"

She swiped it away, and Kazuya plunged to the floor. He groaned and clutched his shoulder as needles spread around it.

"Boss..."

Kazuya pried and slapped Maeda's helping hand off and sat up. Servants slowed down and watched the scene unfold, only scurrying away as his eyes fell on them.

"This isn't you like you, Kazuya. You can always go to the middle of nowhere, summon a helicopter, RTB, and let the Air Force do the rest. We only have what? Twenty-four hours until Kojiki makes landfall? But you're not going to do that, are you?"

He pushed himself back up, and Ibuki continued.

"What has being yourself brought you? What has it brought us?"

"I wanted you two to be free."

"And in doing so, we thought it through, even if we loathed it. We rationalized leaving, even if we didn't want to. But what can we do? It was the logical choice. It was our freedom to choose, but if we chose wrong, you would help us choose."

"Do you really wanna go there?"

"You got what you wanted, and now you want to go out there, guns blazing, killing bad guys, and get the new girl? Yeah. I heard from the knights. I didn't know you liked older ones."

"I don't need to hear this."

He walked away, or he'll get caught in the moment again. Ibuki was safe. That's all he needed to know. There's only Chitose and the recon team left to save, but Ibuki tugged his coat.

"Don't be fucking silly. You're throwing away so much, and for what?!"

"I shouldn't have left you two there."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Kazuya pulled his arm away from her clutches. You know what I mean. He left at the wrong place at the worst time. Kami, why does it have to be so goddamn difficult? Don't those slave collars in Isekais lose their effects once undone? Where was Kazuya's? Her worry wasn't built out of desire, but the side effect that kept her loyal.

"Answer me!" she yanked him back face to face.

And yet why look at him like that? Why shed tears hoping for the opposite? He already told her a long time ago. There was no love that night, nor was there any when Ibuki revealed her identity and circumstances. Was it possible? Perhaps. But not like this. Not when she held herself responsible for his death for a long time to even consider...Kazuya stopped himself as he saw it again.
